The younger generation in Kodarma, Jharkhand, has taken to the streets to express dissatisfaction with the terrible conditions in schools. These students used viral slogans on social media, such as 'One cigarette, two cups of tea, ai-ai-ai to the representatives.'
The students stated that they need teachers or education, or they want the school to be closed. This protest caused a stir among administrative bodies.
The situation concerns the government school 10+2 Basodih, where the future of over 2500 students rests on the shoulders of only 10 teachers. Hundreds of students, outraged by the lack of classes, leaking roofs, locked toilets, and generally low level of organization, organized a foot march and surrounded the Satgawa block headquarters.
A total of 2540 students are enrolled in grades 9 through 12 at Basodih school. Documents state there are 22 teacher positions, of which 18 were present. However, eight of these 18 teachers were sent to other schools on deputation from the education department. Students note that there are no teachers for English, History, Sanskrit, Biology, and Economics in grades 9 and 10. Furthermore, there are no teachers for Mathematics, Chemistry, History, Hindi, and Sanskrit in grades 11 and 12.
Students also reported that water leaks into classrooms during the rainy season. The most humiliating aspect is that the toilets are locked, causing significant discomfort for the female students. When local complaints did not receive attention from officials, the students' anger reached its peak. The students walked a 10-kilometer march from Basodih school to the Satgawa block headquarters and staged a sit-in strike, spreading out blankets.
