The volume of debt renegotiations made by individuals aged 65 or older increased by 43.8% in the state of Piauí during the period between January and August 2026, compared to the same interval in 2025. According to data compiled by Serasa, Piauí showed the largest increase in the Northeast region.
In this initial period of 2026, seniors closed a total of 9.8 thousand renegotiation agreements in Piauí. This advance surpassed the state's overall average, which was 30.2% when considering all age groups. In total, 493.1 thousand agreements were registered in the state during the first eight months of 2026.
Default among seniors rose by 10.7%
Despite the growth in renegotiations, the number of people aged 60 or older in default also showed an expansion in Brazil. According to the Serasa Default and Debt Renegotiation Map, there was a 10.7% increase between August 2025 and August 2026. This was the largest growth observed among all age groups analyzed by the company during this period.
The increase in negotiations among seniors in Piauí also exceeded the national average. Nationally, people aged 65 or older formalized 849 thousand agreements between January and August 2026, corresponding to a 23.1% growth compared to the same period in 2025. Considering all age groups, Brazil recorded 38.3 million renegotiation agreements in the period, representing a 17.2% increase in one year.
Negotiations can be done online
Serasa offers the possibility of carrying out debt renegotiations online through its official portal. The company reports that more than 2.2 thousand companies are involved in this initiative, which aggregates hundreds of millions of proposals with discounts reaching up to 90%.
