Vusi Moyo, who has progressed from a schoolboy to a Springbok national team player, will face one of the most serious tests of his career on Saturday. He will be in charge of leading the Sharks' attack in the match against Leinster, which will take place at Kings Park.
The young player is 20 years old. Just eighteen months ago, he was finishing school at King Edward VII School in Johannesburg. During this time, he has achieved significant success: becoming a junior world champion, debuting for the Sharks, and earning his first cap for the Springboks.
Now, he is entrusted with managing the Sharks' attack in the confrontation with the reigning URC champions. His approach to this task is described as refreshingly simple. Moyo stated: 'For me, this week is simply about taking responsibility and believing in what the coaches have prepared over the week.'
He also noted that the return of Springboks players has changed the atmosphere in the Sharks, as Andre Esterhuizen, Thomas du Toit, and Edwin van der Merwe are in the starting lineup, while Ethan Hooker, Ox Nche, and Eben Etzebeth are on the bench.
Moyo is particularly happy about the return of captain Esterhuizen to the inside centre position. 'Andre was there with me during my debut for the Sharks, and his return is very exciting,' he shared.
Without letting Leinster's status distract him from the task, Moyo mentioned that he will be facing Ireland's stars: Sam Prendergast, Robbie Henshaw, and Tommy O'Brien. He emphasized: 'We are not focusing on what Leinster can do, but on what we can achieve.' He added that the Sharks team has set high standards for itself that they aim to meet.
This mature outlook is characteristic of a player whose adult career is just beginning. Moyo graduated from KES after certification in 2024. Before joining the Sharks, he represented the Lions team at the under-18 level. In 2025, he helped the junior Springboks win the Rugby U20 World Cup, becoming the top scorer with 63 points.
Moyo's breakthrough at the Sharks occurred in May when he first started against Zebre at Kings Park. In this match, which ended in a 54-19 victory, he scored a touchdown and converted five extra points, demonstrating a composure that already drew attention to him as a promising player.
This was followed by his call-up to the Springboks. Moyo debuted for them against Wales at Kings Park in July, at only 20 years old. Last week, he started in the first URC Sharks match against Ospreys, converting all four extra points in the first half and adding two penalties in the second half, leading to a 41-24 victory.
Now he faces Leinster, but Moyo views this game not as an opportunity for self-promotion, but as a duty to improve his teammates' play. 'I think the competition within the team is healthy, and you want to stay sharp,' he said. He also noted that his coach, JP (Pietersen), choosing him demonstrates great trust.
This competition is especially high in the winger position, where Moyo worked with Jordan Hendricks and Siya Masuku. 'Even if Jordan and Siya aren't in the squad, they still help and give advice on how to do things,' he reported.
Moyo clearly understands his main task against Leinster: 'My job is to organize the forwards and backfielders so that they move forward.' He concluded that it is a matter of personal responsibility and knowledge of the details.
