Indian all-rounder Simi Singh retires after battling illness, his life saved by his wife

Simi Singh, an Indian all-rounder who represented Ireland, officially announced the end of his professional cricket career on September 30, 2026. His career, spanning over five years in international cricket, was marked by achievements, challenges, and a period when he had to fight for his life—a struggle far more difficult than any game.

Simi Singh arrived in Ireland from India in 2006 for hotel management purposes and did not initially plan to play international cricket. However, it was cricket that gave his life a new direction. He played for Ireland in 35 ODI matches and 53 T20 Internationals. During his ODI career, he took 39 wickets and scored 593 runs, while his T20I statistics include 44 wickets and 296 runs.

In his career, Simi participated in the T20 World Cup, where he scored a century, batting eighth against South Africa, and also took five wickets against the UAE. He highly values his average performance in ODIs, which stood at 3.99. According to Simi, when he was packing for his trip to Ireland, cricket was not on his mind, so his participation in the World Cup and his successes against South Africa were special moments for him.

Simi Singh's career was abruptly interrupted in 2024 due to a mysterious fever. While undergoing treatment in Ireland, doctors could not determine the cause of the illness, and his condition continued to deteriorate. After returning to India, it was discovered that he suffered from acute liver failure, which required a liver transplant. At this critical moment, his wife, Agamdip Kaur, acted as his guardian angel by donating part of her liver and saving Simi's life.

Simi Singh emphasized that his wife is his 'angelic guardian' and gave him a new life. This period was extremely difficult for the entire family. Currently, Simi is recovering in Mohali, and although improvements are being observed, the process is slow. Due to the long recovery, it became difficult for him to return to professional sports, and he gradually fell out of the selection process.

Simi explained that in Ireland, no one was surprised by his decision to leave the sport, as his name had not previously been considered for selection. Professional play became impossible during his recovery, so he decided to conclude things with dignity. The beginning of his sporting journey was laid in India, where he played for Punjab at the U-14 and U-17 levels but did not achieve the desired success. It was in an atmosphere of disappointment in 2006 that he went to Ireland.

The first phase in Ireland was also not easy. Despite strict residency rules, he balanced playing cricket with acquiring other professions and qualifications. He obtained a Level 2 coach certification from the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), as well as a personal trainer certificate. This experience now lays the foundation for his next stage.

Simi Singh opened his cricket academy in Mohali, although he does not currently manage it himself. His initial plan is to focus entirely on recovery and then transition to coaching. He is also considering taking a Level 3 coach course at the ECB, believing this will open up new opportunities in the field of cricket.

Looking back on this turn in his career, Simi Singh feels less regret and more gratitude. He noted that he feels relaxed, his parents are healthy, and he is glad that his father could also attend matches. He also mentioned that he no longer misses holidays and has gotten rid of problems related to frequent travel.

Simi Singh, who left India with an unfinished cricket career, realized his dream in Ireland. However, illness stopped his game, but life gave him a second chance. Now in Mohali, he strives to prepare the next generation in the very sport that once gave him a new identity.
