How the date October 2nd, associated with Ganesha, became part of pop culture thanks to the film 'Drishyam'

For a long time, October 2nd was observed as Gandhi's Birthday. However, over the last decade, this date has acquired new cultural significance. Now, when October 2nd arrives, people begin to remember not only Gandhi's Birthday but also trips to Panji, satsangs, and pav-bhajis, which became possible thanks to a film that gradually entered Indian pop culture. Today, the last film in the 'Drishyam' franchise was released on October 2nd, and along with it, memes related to this date have returned.

If 'satsang', Panji, or pav-bhaji are mentioned on social media on October 2nd, no additional references to 'Drishyam' are needed to understand the context. The true strength of the film lies not only in its suspense; it has also given new significance to the date October 2nd. In the film, Vijay visits Panji, attends a satsang, and eats pav-bhaji. These phrases ceased to be mere movie dialogues; they have become part of a series of cinematic lines that people recognize even without naming the film.

The popularity of any dialogue in cinema is not uncommon, but the case of 'Drishyam' is different. Here, it is not just one dialogue that is popular, but the entire film connected with a specific date. The story that Vijay Salgaonkar repeatedly told to the police is so deeply rooted in the minds of viewers that October 2nd has begun to remind people of the film every year.

There is also an interesting psychological aspect. To protect his family, Vijay invented a story, making it plausible by constantly repeating small details: where the satsang took place, when the film was shown, when they ate pav-bhaji. All these nuances were not just plot devices; it was this repetition that gradually became part of the viewers' memory. We might forget the characters' names, but the connection between 'October 2nd' and 'pav-bhaji' remains in memory.

This is how a film becomes part of pop culture. A dialogue is not just heard; it starts being used in everyday conversations. A scene is not just watched; it turns into a meme.

One reason for the popularity of 'Drishyam' is that it creates exceptional suspense through very ordinary things. There are no majestic palaces, superheroes, or missions to save the world. It is an ordinary family, a father, and the circumstances through which he uses his intelligence to get out of a difficult situation. Therefore, the small elements of the film easily blended into people's daily speech. Four words—October 2nd, Panji, satsang, and pav-bhaji—are no longer just props from the film. By connecting them, viewers instantly enter Vijay Salgaonkar's story.

Social media has amplified this connection. Every year, when October 2nd arrives, dialogues, memes, and references to 'Drishyam' reappear. Brands have also noticed this popularity. Many companies, from food and delivery platforms to cinemas, have used the contexts of 'pav-bhaji' and 'family' in their marketing activities related to October 2nd. For example, PVR INOX launched a special offer for the first 500 viewers, offering free pav-bhaji with the purchase of four tickets.

The most curious aspect of this connection is that October 2nd is already an extremely important date in Indian history. On this day, Mahatma Gandhi's Birthday is celebrated, but 'Drishyam' linked this date to a completely different, fictional world. On one hand, October 2nd reminds us of truth and non-violence. On the other hand, October 2nd reminds us of Vijay Salgaonkar's fabricated story, created to save his family, about lies and moral dilemmas. Perhaps this contrast is what makes this date so interesting in pop culture.

Therefore, the creators of 'Drishyam' chose October 2nd for the next installment of the franchise. That same date, which laid the foundation for all of Vijay's plan to save his family within the plot, has now become part of the cinematic journey of this franchise. Ajay Devgn also shared a trailer for the film, writing: 'The story that began on October 2nd will end on October 2nd.'

Perhaps the answer lies not only in the suspense. 'Drishyam' did not present the audience with a perfect hero. Vijay Salgaonkar is an ordinary person making decisions that can raise moral questions to save his family. Nevertheless, the audience supports him. This is because the film centered on the fear for family, not crime. Instead of trying to justify Vijay's decisions, the story constantly makes the viewer wonder: 'What would I do if I were in such a situation?'

This is the greatest achievement of 'Drishyam'. It didn't just remind the viewer 'what happened on October 2nd,' but also left them with the question: 'What line of morality can a person cross in an attempt to save their family?' And perhaps that is why, after 11 years, October 2nd is launching this story again. Viewers may or may not watch the film again, but in social media, Panji, satsang, and pav-bhaji reappear.

Review of 'Drishyam: Conclusion' by Ajay Devgn: A Comparison with Mohanlal's Original

The film 'Drishyam: Conclusion,' starring Ajay Devgn, was released in theaters on October 2, nearly 11 years after the premiere of the first part of 'Drishyam' in 2015. The original picture was a sensation due to its combination of family emotions and unexpected plot twists. This work was an official remake of the Malayalam film 'Drishyam,' whose screenplay was written by Jeethu Joseph.

The 'Drishyam' series has evolved into a franchise that currently consists of three parts in different languages. However, in the version for the Hindi-speaking audience, the third episode, 'Drishyam: Conclusion,' was written by the project creator Abhishek Pathak himself, rather than being based on the plot of the Malayalam counterpart. Furthermore, Vijay Salgaonkar's story is concluded in this version.

Despite 'Drishyam' being a remake franchise, the Hindi version differs from the Malayalam original. Although the Malayalam 'Drishyam 3' could initially be perceived as the third installment, after watching, it became clear that opting for the new version was the right choice. Critics and audiences agree that 'Drishyam: Conclusion' significantly surpasses the Malayalam 'Drishyam 3' in terms of viewer engagement. Meanwhile, the Malayalam 'Drishyam 3' is considered the weakest film within this franchise.

In the plot of the Malayalam 'Drishyam 3,' Georgekutty dreams of a new life with his family, wishing for his daughter Anju to marry and establish her own home. However, due to negative public opinion arising from the Varun murder case in the city, no one wants to marry Anju. Meanwhile, Varun's parents, Gita and Prabhakar, are planning revenge for their son's death. They devise a carefully planned scheme for Anju to reveal the truth about Varun's murder and her father's secret. Gita and Prabhakar achieve partial success in this mission. But then Georgekutty intervenes to protect his daughter and voluntarily surrenders to the police, thus concluding the story of 'Drishyam 3,' which resembles a family drama more than a suspense thriller.

Ajay Devgn's version uses only about ten percent of the plot from the Malayalam counterpart. 'Drishyam: Conclusion' focuses not only on Vijay Salgaonkar's family but also includes a police investigation and a gripping court trial. Tension builds around Sam's body. Unlike the Hindi version, where the focus is not on Anju's marital life, here attention is paid to Vijay Salgaonkar's cunning and resourcefulness in confronting his adversaries. Thus, the Hindi 'Drishyam 3' retains the core of the franchise, whereas the Malayalam 'Drishyam 3' delves too deeply into family drama, causing disappointment. It can be argued that Ajay Devgn made the right decision not to create a layer-by-layer remake of Mohanlal's film. This deserves praise for director and writer Abhishek Pathak for creating such a strong film.
