The Municipality of Macaé has launched a campaign to call residents aged 85 and older for vaccination against severe infections caused by the bacterium Streptococcus pneumoniae.
A new 20-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (VPC20) is available in the city. The vaccine is already in stock at all Basic Health Units (UBS), Family Health Centers (ESF), Airport Emergency Care, and the Vaccination Home.
Municipal leadership makes a special request to relatives and guardians to encourage and accompany elderly people to the nearest service point. The goal is to immunize the largest possible number of older people, which will help prevent serious complications such as pneumonia, meningitis, and septicemia, as well as avoid hospitalizations and deaths.
This initiative, implemented within the Universal Health System (SUS), expands the epidemiological protection of the city's elderly population. For those who previously received the Pneumo 23 vaccine, medical staff advise bringing their medical record book: those who received two doses are considered protected, but those who received only one dose need to undergo a booster with the new VPC20 one year after the first injection.
To receive a dose and maintain immunization status, it is sufficient to appear at one of the service points with a medical record book, an official document with a photo, and a SUS card. Medical teams are ready to assess the vaccination history and determine the appropriate course of action for each elderly person.
