A biologist rescued young quero-quero birds that were trapped in a manhole in the state of Santa Catarina. The event was filmed and later shared on social media by the professional.
Christian Raboch Lempek, a biologist from the Jaraguaense Environmental Foundation (Fujama), used a long tool to reach the birds trapped in the hole. After bringing the chicks closer to the surface, he managed to remove them through the manhole's grates, holding them with his hand.
The rescue took place on Wednesday, the 31st, in the area near the Jaraguá Arena, after residents noticed the situation and requested assistance. The rescue video exceeded ten million views already on Thursday, the 1st.
According to reports, the two chicks ran towards their mother, who was waiting. When people approached the manhole, the mother showed aggression, advancing against the people in an attempt to protect her chicks. It was then that the individuals noticed something unusual and investigated the inside of the manhole, finding the two chicks.
The quero-quero (Vanellus chilensis) is approximately 37 centimeters long and weighs about 280 grams. Its coloration consists of shades of black, white, and gray, featuring a dark band extending from the neck to the chest. Additionally, its irises and legs are reddish. This species is known for being combative and frequently causing conflicts with other animals in its territory.
