Olivia Dean's Success Accused of Plagiarizing Bill Withers' Song 'Just the Two of Us'

The company managing the catalog of singer Bill Withers (1938–2020) claims that Olivia Dean's song 'I've Seen It' copied the composition 'Just the Two of Us'. This information was published in the American magazine 'Billboard'.

According to the publication, the lawsuit was initiated on Thursday (the 1st) by Mattie Music Group. The lawsuit does not mention Olivia Dean herself, but instead names her record label, Capitol Records.

Attorneys for Mattie Music Group insist that Olivia Dean's music contains 'obvious' similarities. 'Billboard' notes that a musicologist was brought in to compare the two songs and concluded that there were 'substantial similarities,' including 'repetition of a distinctive, protectable melody.'

The album 'Art of Loving,' which features the song 'I've Seen It,' was released in September 2025 and became one of the most highly rated works of that year, thanks to singles that reached the top of the charts.

Bill Withers, one of the prominent figures of American soul music from the 1970s and 1980s, has hits such as 'Ain't No Sunshine' and 'Lean on Me' in his repertoire, as well as 'Just the Two of Us,' for which he received one of three Grammy Awards in the Best R&B Song category.
