According to the Institute for Sustainable Development and Environment (Idema), dead fish were found along the banks of the Potenga River in Natal. This body began an investigation after receiving a complaint about mass fish death on Thursday morning (the 1st).
Upon receiving the report, Idema's Environmental Supervision Department (UFAmb) dispatched a team to the specified locations to check the situation. The inspection confirmed the presence of dead fish along the riverbanks, but the likely cause has not yet been established.
As part of the complaint, video recordings made by fishermen between Wednesday evening (the 30th) and early Thursday morning were submitted to the body. These footage shows fish floating on the surface and others jumping out of the water.
Idema requested that the RN Water Management Institute (Igarn) conduct a water analysis. According to this institute, it will only be possible to assess the potential causes of the incident after such an analysis is completed.
Currently, there is no information regarding the quantity or volume of the dead fish found. The inspection team continues its work on site on Thursday to monitor the situation.
