Central Minister Gadkari presented the Skybus concept — a flying bus system

Following the statement by the Central Minister of Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, about a 'flying bus,' discussions about the Skybus technology have reignited. Gadkari shared a video demonstrating the operating principles and potential of this modern transport system.

Gadkari views Skybus not merely as a new transport technology but as a possible option for future cities. He emphasized that the goal of these innovations is not only to increase speed but also to create a more convenient and advanced transport infrastructure for the population.

Previously, Gadkari visited the uSky Testing and Certification Center located in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates. There, he familiarized himself with the Skybus technology and took a test ride. According to information from uSky, this system operates on an elevated rail system situated above the ground.

In this technology, electric capsules move along a track installed above ground level instead of traveling on streets. The main idea is to create a separate transport corridor above the road surface, which allows for the movement of passengers and goods with less use of land resources.

A feature of Skybus is that it does not utilize existing ground roads for transportation; the vehicles move along elevated tracks. Such a system could be implemented in cities experiencing high road congestion where allocating land for new roads or metro lines is difficult. The objective of this technology is to reduce overcrowding, decrease environmental pollution, and provide an alternative for urban transport that requires less space.

Gadkari noted in his video that this technology could prove useful given current transport sector challenges, calling it a potential solution for large-scale transportation, as well as for moving passengers and goods, while highlighting issues of safety and cost.

The mention of Skybus is not new. Gadkari has previously spoken about the need for such a transport system in India. On September 30, 2026, at one event, he reiterated his desire to launch air-moving buses, describing a concept that would allow people to travel from one point to another above the ground. Earlier still, in July, at an event in Lucknow, Gadkari stated that the government is working on implementing new technologies in the transport sector, mentioning 'flying buses.' These statements drew ridicule on social media.

According to Gadkari's office, there is a need to consider new transport options for India's rapidly growing cities. An elevated transport system could solve problems in megacities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Pune, and Nagpur, where population growth and transport collapse are increasing. However, no timelines have been announced yet for launching Skybus as a regular public transport service in India; discussions regarding the new transport technology and its potential application are ongoing.
