Ministry of Transport: 86.5% of Tashkent residents approved public transport fare increase

The decision to introduce new fares for public transport in Tashkent was made by the City Council of People's Deputies of Tashkent following a public survey and an economic analysis of the city passenger transport system.

The Ministry of Transport clarified that according to Article 12 of the Law 'On City Passenger Transport,' establishing maximum fares for urban passenger transport falls under the competence of local representative state authorities, which in Tashkent is the City Council of People's Deputies of Tashkent.

As part of the project on fares, the Ministry of Transport conducted a survey on its official social media pages and channels to gauge the opinion of the capital's residents and passengers.

According to the survey results, 36.5% of participants agreed with the fare increase provided there was a reduction in travel intervals and modernization of the fleet with newer vehicles. Another 31.8% fully supported the increase, citing time savings and service quality as important factors.

Additionally, 18.2% considered the new fares partially acceptable but expressed concerns about the potential rise in household expenses. Meanwhile, 13.4% of respondents found the fare change completely unacceptable.

Overall, 86.5% of those surveyed expressed agreement with the fare increase—either fully, partially, or conditional on improving the quality of transport services.

When considering this issue, deputies also studied the economic aspects affecting the financial stability of the system, the economic capabilities of residents, and changes in expenditures since 2023. It was decided to maintain a 50% discount for socially vulnerable groups of passengers, including pensioners, students, and people with disabilities. Passengers will also be able to reduce their costs by purchasing long-term travel passes.

The Ministry of Transport stated that this decision aims to ensure the financial stability of the capital's public transport system, protect its infrastructure, and improve the quality of passenger service. After comprehensive consideration of the issue, the City Council of People's Deputies of Tashkent unanimously approved the fare increase.
