According to data from the analytical platform PeckShield, hackers carried out at least 135 attacks on cryptocurrency services during the third quarter, resulting in total losses of $1.14 billion.
Loss details in September
The crypto industry suffered the largest financial damage in September, when 55 major hacks were recorded. The total damage for that month reached $766.49 million. Among the most significant incidents was an attack on the Bitget platform, which caused losses of $387 million, as well as the hack of Liquid Network for $320 million; of these funds, $285 million was recovered. These two events were the largest cryptocurrency thefts since the beginning of the current year, surpassing the losses recorded in April during attacks on Drift and KelpDAO.
The list of major hacks in September also included attacks on the MEV bot yoink for $7.81 million, the Duelbits service for $7 million, DCENT Wallet for $6.57 million, as well as the projects Astroport, Drop, Nostra Finance, and the Nomic bridge.
Situation in previous months
Previously, in August, 50 attacks were recorded, causing damages amounting to $136.3 million. The most affected service in August was TectonicFi, which lost $74 million. In July, 30 attacks were carried out, resulting in the theft of $210 million. Of this amount, $70 million was attributed to the cold wallets ColdCard, and the total losses from this incident later increased to $115 million.
In addition, two instances of data leaks were reported in August and September concerning the hardware wallet manufacturer Trezor. The leaks occurred due to breaches of the systems of the delivery service ShipMonk and the postal provider. The attackers managed to obtain customer contact information and began sending phishing emails, the extent of the damage from which is still being determined.
