BMW launches F 450 R, a naked bike derived from the new GS platform

BMW introduced the F 450 R this Thursday, presenting the naked version based on the 450 platform, which was previously revealed with the adventure motorcycle F 450 GS. The model name, which had already been speculated by international media outlets, was officially confirmed. As suggested by the promotional material, the bike retains several components from its off-road sibling, such as the engine, while receiving the necessary adjustments to suit the naked format.

The manufacturer stated that the F 450 R's design follows the aesthetic of the S 1000 R, which is considered the most powerful naked bike offered by the brand.

Technical Specifications and Performance

The parallel twin engine has a capacity of 420 cm³ and features liquid cooling and a six-speed transmission. It generates 48 hp at 8,750 rpm and produces a torque of 4.38 kgf·m at 6,750 rpm, figures identical to those of the F 450 GS. Although BMW indicated that the engine was recalibrated for asphalt use, this change is noticeable in behavior and sound, not in the official technical data.

The company declared that 80% of the torque is accessible from 3,000 rpm. To help reduce vibrations, the bike uses an engine with 135° phased pins and a balance shaft. The official fuel consumption is 26.3 km/l, and with a 14-liter fuel tank, the range reaches 350 km. The exhaust system, made of stainless steel and equipped with two catalytic converters, complies with Euro 5+ standards; maintenance should be performed every 10 thousand kilometers.

Structure and Components

The steel tubular chassis is shared with the GS, keeping the engine integrated into the structure, but the F 450 R has specific adjustments and wheelbase distances to optimize both urban and highway use. At the front, there is a 43 mm KYB inverted fork. The rear is supported by a cast aluminum swingarm, which works together with a KYB central shock absorber, allowing adjustment of spring preload and rebound.

Only the Sport version, which is not part of the entry edition, offers compression and rebound adjustment on the fork. The 17-inch alloy wheels use tubeless tires sized 110/70 in the front and 150/60 in the rear. The braking system includes a 310 mm disc with a four-piston Brembo caliper at the front and a 240 mm disc with a single-piston ByBre caliper at the rear.

Technology and Versions

With a curb weight of 175 kg, BMW states that the F 450 R offers one of the best power-to-weight ratios in the A2 category, intended for riders with less experience, according to the European license. All models come equipped with ABS Pro, which functions even in curves, and DTC traction control, which minimizes rear wheel slip. Additionally, it includes DBC, which prevents unwanted acceleration during heavy braking, and MSR, which manages engine braking during downshifts to prevent rear wheel lock-up.

Rain, Road, and Dynamic riding modes are standard, as is the 6.5-inch TFT display, which offers connectivity for navigation, music, and calls. Other standard features include full LED lighting, dynamic brake light, and a USB-C port. Heated grips are also supplied from the factory, which is unusual for motorcycles in this price range. The seat height is 790 mm, adjustable to 775 mm or 810 mm with optional seats. Footpegs and side supports are made of forged aluminum, and the gear shift pattern can be reversed for track use. The Quickshifter and automated clutch are available only on the more expensive versions.

Availability

The F 450 R will be marketed in four distinct versions. Those who purchase the entry editions can add the quickshifter and ERC later as original accessories. BMW has not yet released prices or launch markets for the F 450 R, and there is no confirmation that this naked bike will reach Brazil. In Brazilian territory, the brand has only confirmed the F 450 GS, which will be manufactured in Manaus (AM), but without a defined price or launch date. Although it is likely that the naked bike will use the same assembly line, this remains only a local enthusiast expectation.

Known details about the new BMW 450 naked motorcycle

Although BMW has not yet released the name, displacement, or exact specifications of its new naked bike, international publications suggest that the model may be named F 450 R, although this nomenclature has not been confirmed by the manufacturer.

The available image shows a motorcycle with sporty characteristics, without fairings, featuring a voluminous fuel tank, raised rear end, and a compact front section. It is possible to notice the use of inverted forks and alloy wheels, which appear to be 17 inches on both ends, in addition to disc brakes both front and rear. With this setup, it is evident that the new model will include ABS brakes on both wheels.

The front part of the bike closely resembles that of the F 450 GS, and it is expected that the headlights will be full LED type. Another notable detail is the possibility of an exhaust system positioned under the engine, which would contribute to a cleaner side profile. However, BMW itself warned that the promotional material was processed with artificial intelligence, meaning some visual elements may not reflect the final model.

The strongest hypothesis suggests that this naked bike will use the mechanical package of the F 450 GS. This engine is a 420 cc parallel twin equipped with liquid cooling and a six-speed transmission. In the adventure version, it generates 48 hp at 8,750 rpm and a torque of 4.38 kgf·m at 6,750 rpm.

This power positions the motorcycle at the limit of the A2 category of the European driving license, which imposes power restrictions according to the rider's level. There are reports that BMW could adapt the engine calibration for urban use, but this information has not been officialized. A change in the power map is possible due to the distinct riding proposals between the models.

If the naked bike is derived from the GS, the most significant modifications should occur in the riding dynamics. While the F 450 GS uses a 19-inch front wheel designed for mixed use, the transition to 17-inch wheels and road-focused tires would be the logical path for a purely asphalt-oriented bike. Furthermore, it is expected that the suspension may have a reduced travel, although this is only an expectation based on the change in concept, not confirmed data.

BMW has not yet announced the price of this new naked bike, but the brand's line offers references. In Portugal, the F 450 GS starts at € 7,200 (approximately R$ 42 thousand in direct conversion). In the F 900 family, the naked costs considerably less than the adventure model: the F 900 R starts at € 9,665 (R$ 56 thousand), and the F 900 GS starts at € 14,050 (R$ 82 thousand), representing a difference of about 31%. If this same proportion is applied to the 450 line, the new naked bike would be close to € 5,000, which is equivalent to about R$ 29.4 thousand.

However, since prices are not converted directly and arrive in Brazil with higher costs, it is certain that the model will not have a value lower than R$ 38,990, considering that the G 310 GS has this initial price in the country. The safest estimate is between R$ 40 thousand and R$ 50 thousand.

The prototype of this new model was presented at EICMA 2024 and is scheduled to reach the market in the first half of 2026, starting with India. The F 450 GS was developed in collaboration with TVS Motor Company and is manufactured at the Hosur plant in Asia. The engine has a crankshaft with 135° phased pins, focused on smoothness, and has an average consumption of 26.3 km/l. The chassis is new, built with a steel tubular frame, and features KYB suspensions, Brembo brakes, and 19-inch front and 17-inch rear wheels.

The listed equipment includes riding modes, traction control, which aims to reduce rear wheel slip, ABS Pro, which also works during cornering braking, and a 6.5-inch TFT panel with connectivity capability. Depending on the version, the bike may come equipped with quickshifter and automated ERC clutch.

The F 450 GS is positioned below the F 800 GS and F 900 GS models and is expected to replace the G 310 GS, whose platform is in the discontinuation phase. It is expected to offer the true off-road vocation that the 310 never fully delivered.

In Brazil, BMW confirmed the arrival of the F 450 GS during the Interlagos Festival, held in August. Production will be carried out at the Manaus (AM) factory, which will complete 10 years in 2026. The brand informed that the unit exhibited at the event was the first to arrive in the national territory. However, the model is still undergoing validation tests and adjustments to meet the conditions and preferences of the Brazilian market. Price and launch date have not yet been disclosed.
