Four companies dominate the electric scooter market, 1.5 million units sold

The demand for electric vehicles in the Indian market continues to grow. An analysis of data from the first nine months of the current year, 2026, shows significant growth in the sales of two-wheeled electric bicycles. According to transport data, between January and September 2026, 1.561 million electric two-wheeled vehicles were sold in the Indian segment.

Companies such as TVS Motor, Bajaj Auto, Ather Energy, and Hero MotoCorp hold the largest market share. These four manufacturers control 76 percent of sales over the last nine months. These figures demonstrate that the market is effectively controlled by these four major producers.

For comparison, this figure was 9.61 million units during the first nine months of the previous year, 2025. Thus, over the nine months of the current year, sales of two-wheeled electric bicycles increased by 6 million units compared to 2025. The annual growth rate was 62 percent. Throughout all of 2025, these companies collectively sold 13.42 million electric two-wheeled vehicles.

Last month, 1.97 million registrations were recorded in the two-wheeled electric bicycle segment, representing a 7.7 percent increase compared to August. TVS and Bajaj contributed the most to sales.

Among the best-selling models are the iQube from TVS, which is highly popular, and the Bajaj Chetak, which became the best-selling electric scooter last month. The Rezo model from Ather Energy has also gained consumer recognition, and the Vida from Hero MotoCorp is among the most sought-after scooters.

Although data for September has not yet been published, two-wheeled segment sales in 2026 for nine months have already exceeded those of 2025. Any sales in the next three months will be included in the overall growth of this segment. Over the nine months of the current year, the companies sold 2.19 million more units than last year.

While major manufacturers have benefited the most in terms of market share, there is also impressive growth among smaller companies. For example, River Mobility's share increased from 1.27 percent in 2025 to 2.46 percent in 2026.

Brazil surpasses one million electrified vehicles; sales projection for 2026

Brazil has reached the milestone of one million registered light electrified vehicles, accumulating registrations since January 2012, the starting point of the historical series maintained by the Brazilian Electric Vehicle Association (ABVE). This level was reached on September 24 and was announced by the association's president, Ricardo Bastos, during an event held in São Paulo.

This count includes fully electric models (BEV), plug-in hybrid (PHEV), and conventional hybrids with electric drive (HEV and HEV Flex). It is important to note that micro-hybrids (MHEV) are excluded, as, according to ABVE criteria in effect since 2025, they do not have autonomous electric drive. Furthermore, the total refers to registration records and not the fleet currently in circulation, without discounting vehicles that have been taken out of use.

The evolution demonstrates the speed of transformation in the sector. In 2012, the country registered only 117 electrified vehicles, while in 2016 this number was 1,091. The annual volume grew from 177,358 units in 2024 to 223,912 in 2025, and ABVE forecasts approximately 450,000 units for 2026.

From January to August of this year, 328,477 units were sold, a volume representing a 160.5% increase compared to the same period in 2025. This result accounts for 34.6% of all electrified vehicles registered in the country up to the end of August. To complete the million, an additional 49.8 thousand registrations were needed in the first three weeks of September.

Market penetration has also increased significantly. Cumulatively in 2026, electrified vehicles represented 20.2% of all light vehicles sold in the national territory. In August, this share rose to 22%, compared to 9.4% in the same month of 2025, indicating that for every hundred new cars registered in the month, twenty-two had some type of electric propulsion.

Analyzing only the year 2026, 100% electric models account for 44% of electrified sales, and plug-in hybrids represent 36%. Traditional hybrids, which were predominant in the early stages of the historical series, make up the remainder, signaling a change in the profile of the Brazilian consumer, with a greater preference for vehicles that require external recharging.

August consolidated this trend. Pure electric vehicles broke the monthly record with 27,166 registrations, which equals 47.3% of the 57,386 electrified vehicles sold that month. Together, BEV and PHEV accounted for 83.1% of the segment. The month's total registered a 2% growth compared to July and an 184% jump compared to August 2025. If we include the 6,669 micro-hybrids, which are not counted by ABVE, the total volume would be 64,055 units, representing 24% of the market.

Electric scooter exports grew by 450%: TVS, Bajaj, and Ather dominate

The electric scooter segment is experiencing one of the highest growth rates in the market, excluding three-wheeled electric vehicles. Monthly sales of electric scooters are increasing, and in the first five months of the 2026-27 fiscal year, companies demonstrated impressive results in the domestic market. The growth of this segment year-on-year was 114 percent.

In the first five months, 791,325 electric scooters were sold in India. Regarding exports, overall for the segment of scooters manufactured in India (including ICE and electric models), a 34% growth was noted, with the total volume of exported scooters reaching 358,993 units.

Specifically for electric scooters, exports showed a colossal growth of 450% year-on-year. Between April and August 2026, companies exported 15,418 electric scooters, compared to only 2,807 units sent in the same period last year. This figure indicates growing demand for Indian electric scooters in foreign markets, which is happening against the backdrop of rising fuel prices in many parts of the world.

An analysis of exports by company shows that TVS Motor Company leads. This company exported 6,702 electric scooters between April and August, significantly exceeding the 1,850 units exported the previous year, demonstrating a year-on-year growth of 262%. Bajaj Auto also performed strongly, exporting 4,818 units compared to 218 units sent last year, corresponding to an increase of 2,194% year-on-year.

Ather Energy also showed good growth, exporting 3,573 electric scooters from April to August 2026, whereas this figure was 742 units last year, meaning an export growth of 382% year-on-year. Additionally, Grievs Electric exported 169 units, and Hero MotoCorp (Vida) exported 135 units.

As for models, among those exported were 5,738 units of TVS iQube, 4,818 units of Bajaj Chetak, 1,874 units of Ather 450, 1,699 units of Ather Rigta, and 964 units of TVS Orbiter. 135 units of Hero Vida, 82 units of Ampere Nexza, and 51 units of Magnus were also exported.
