Cheese product made from raw milk recalled in the US due to E. coli contamination fears

Sierra Nevada Cheese Company has voluntarily recalled all Graziers Raw Milk Cheese products currently distributed across the United States due to potential contamination with E. coli O26:H11 bacteria.

This recall comes amid an ongoing investigation into a multi-state outbreak of E. coli O26:H11 being conducted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Reasons for the Recall

The investigation has not yet identified a specific batch, date code, or production date associated with the possible contamination. Consequently, Sierra Nevada Cheese Company decided to recall all circulating Graziers Raw Milk Cheese products as a precautionary measure.

According to information gathered during the investigation, cases of illness are epidemiologically linked to the consumption of Graziers Raw Milk Medium Cheddar cheese. The company has reported identifying thirteen cases so far. The investigation is ongoing, and the source or specific date of contamination has not yet been established.

What is E. coli O26:H11?

E. coli O26:H11 is a strain of E. coli that produces Shiga toxin (STEC), capable of causing serious illnesses. Symptoms may include acute diarrhea syndrome, which can be accompanied by bloody stools, several days after consuming the bacteria. Most people recover within a week.

However, some infected individuals may develop Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS)—a severe condition that can lead to hemolytic anemia, thrombocytopenia, and kidney failure. The most vulnerable groups include young children, especially those under five, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems. HUS can be fatal.

Sierra Nevada Cheese Company initiated the voluntary recall after receiving contact from the FDA regarding the ongoing outbreak investigation conducted by the FDA and CDC.

What should consumers do?

Consumers who have purchased the recalled Graziers Raw Milk Cheese products should refrain from eating or serving them. They must return the product to the place of purchase for a refund or dispose of it.

Company Halts Production and Shipments

Following contact with the FDA regarding the current outbreak investigation, Sierra Nevada Cheese Company immediately suspended the production and shipment of all Graziers Raw Milk Cheese. The company also notified customers who purchased the affected products directly from it and posted relevant announcements on its website and social media. Sierra Nevada Cheese Company states its cooperation with the FDA and CDC as the investigation continues.
