The Brazilian Trade Minister declared that there is potential to reach an agreement with the United States, mentioning that the country is in a new phase of negotiations. This statement was made on Wednesday, following meetings with Jamieson Greer, the American representative for Trade, held in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in the United States.
The Brazilian Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Mauro Vieira and Márcio Elias Rosa, met with Jamieson Greer during the G20 Trade Ministers meeting. Márcio Elias Rosa commented that he felt sincere interest from Greer in establishing a consensus.
Despite this, Rosa emphasized that Brazil seeks a 'total reduction of customs duties' and criticized the tariffs imposed by Donald Trump, classifying them as unjustifiable. The Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the meeting as productive, confirming that the central points of the bilateral trade agenda were discussed.
This meeting marked the first in-person contact between representatives of the two countries since the customs tariffs were applied in July. According to information from Brasília, the United States government will send proposals in the coming weeks aiming to negotiate both customs and non-customs issues.
In July, the administration of US President Donald Trump imposed two rounds of surcharges on Brazilian products, alleging unfair trade practices, an argument refuted by the Brazilian government. Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva accused the United States of trying to interfere in national elections, where his main opponent in the first round will be conservative senator Flávio Bolsonaro, on Sunday.
Flávio Bolsonaro is the eldest son of former Brazilian far-right president Jair Bolsonaro (2019-2022 term), who is an ally of Donald Trump and is currently detained for involvement in an attempted coup. Lula, at 80 years old, had a phone conversation with Donald Trump in August, which lasted over an hour.
Diplomatic tensions between Brasília and Washington have persisted since 2025, the year the United States applied a first surcharge in retaliation for the process that led to Jair Bolsonaro being sentenced to 27 years in prison. Although Donald Trump has not yet openly endorsed Bolsonaro's son in the Brazilian presidential elections, he received him at the White House in May.
