New Stone Age Sites and About 30 Petroglyphs Discovered in Jizzakh
During archaeological field work conducted in the Zomin and Sharof Rashidov districts of the Jizzakh region, new sites dating back to the Stone Age, as well as rock carvings, were identified. This was reported by the press service of the Agency for Cultural Heritage.
The research took place in September with the participation of employees from the Agency for Cultural Heritage and the Yaho Gulomov Samarkand Archaeological Institute. Additionally, Neolithic artifacts were discovered in the western part of the village of Achchi and on the territory of the village of Arja.
Experts emphasize that the findings of Paleolithic and Neolithic monuments in this region, particularly in the Zomin valley and part of the Turkistan massif, indicate the habitation of ancient communities over long historical periods.
During fieldwork in the village of Ravot, located in the Sharof Rashidov district, a group of new rock carvings was found on the left bank of the Ravotsoy. According to preliminary analysis, these petroglyphs may date from the Bronze Age to the Early Middle Ages.
The new finds are considered an important source for studying the settlement, habitat, and economic activities of ancient communities in the Turkistan massif. It was noted that about 30 petroglyphs were recorded on seven slate surfaces, depicting a deer, a mountain goat, a black goat, a dog, a solar symbol, and a hunter passing through a bow.
For reference: the Paleolithic began approximately 2.6 million years ago and continued until 12–10 thousand BC; the Neolithic spanned from the X to the IV millennium BC; the Bronze Age was mainly from the III to the II millennium BC; and the Early Middle Ages cover approximately the 5th to 8th centuries AD in Central Asian history.
