The town of Clarens, located in the Free State province, has been included in the list of best small towns in South Africa to live in. This award adds to the reputation of a place already known for its picturesque mountain landscapes, art galleries, and relaxed atmosphere.
Clarens is situated at the foot of the Maluti Mountains and is only a short drive from the Golden Gate National Park, offering visitors an opportunity to slow down and enjoy the surrounding beauty.
A Town with Rich History
The history of this area dates back to before the founding of the city itself. Initially, the San people lived here, who were later displaced by the Basotho. In turn, the Basotho were expelled from the Orange Free State. Subsequently, a new settlement was established, named after the Swiss village of Clarens on Lake Geneva, which was a favorite resort of the then-president Paul Kruger.
Originally, Clarens functioned as a center for local farming communities, but in the 1920s, the economy began to shift towards tourism, as visitors were attracted by its natural beauty and mild climate. Today, the town has transformed into a thriving colony of artists, adding a creative dimension to it.

Freelancer IOL Nicola Mauson visited Clarens last year and described the town as 'an amazing escape from Johannesburg,' where photography became a key part of the experience.
