Significant changes have occurred in the player selection committee of Indian cricket. Former Indian spinner Pragyan Ojha may lead the Indian team as the next head selector after Ajit Agarkar's term expires. Currently, Ojha is serving as the interim head of the four-member selection committee.
On September 29th, an important meeting took place in Guwahati between the head coach of the Indian team, Gautam Gambhir, and four selectors. Pragyan Ojha, Shiv Sundar Das, Ajay Ratra, and RP Singh were present, but the incumbent head selector, Ajit Agarkar, did not attend this meeting.
The meeting discussed player selection and the squad composition for the upcoming tour of New Zealand. India plans to play five T20 matches starting October 22nd, five ODI matches from November 4th, and two Test matches from November 19th. Additionally, the India-A team will also play three Test matches in New Zealand.
Pragyan Ojha has experience playing in 24 Test matches, 18 ODI matches, and 6 T20 matches internationally; he is a left-arm spinner, which led to him being entrusted with the temporary leadership of the selection committee.
Ajit Agarkar's current tenure with the BCCI ends on October 4th. He previously informed the board of his decision not to extend his service in this position.
In the coming months, the Indian selectors will have to make several important decisions. In addition to the tour of New Zealand, the team needs to prepare for the 2027 ODI World Cup. Therefore, the selectors' attention will be focused on player workload, their availability, and forming the squad for various formats.
Although Pragyan Ojha is currently serving in an interim capacity, reports suggest he could be appointed to this position permanently. However, no official announcement regarding his appointment as head selector has been made yet.
