According to Kyodo News, central Tokyo experienced continuous rainfall for 34 days, marking the longest period of precipitation in the region's history.
This period of non-stop rain began on August 27. The repeated downpours were attributed to typhoons, a stagnant autumn rain front, and a low-pressure area.
The new record streak surpassed the previous record of 33 days, which was set from June 27 to July 29, 2019, as stated by the Japan Meteorological Agency.
The highest amount of rainfall during the current series was recorded on September 21, when Typhoon Dujuan struck the Kanto region, including Tokyo, bringing 156 mm of precipitation.
This typhoon caused floods, landslides, and torrential rains, resulting in 14 deaths in areas near the Japanese capital. Rainfall is expected to persist in eastern Japan until around Thursday, partly due to the autumn rain front.
