The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has released its first Framework on trustworthy artificial intelligence for the Olympic Movement. The goal of this program is to guide organizations in the responsible, ethical, and confident application of artificial intelligence (AI).
The IOC announced that this framework was developed with the support of digital transformation consulting partner Deloitte. It includes seven fundamental principles: protection, data privacy, reliability, transparency, accountability, fairness, and sustainability, as well as a checklist for organizations to assess risks.
Alejandro Merino-Madrid, Head of AI at the IOC, noted that artificial intelligence has the potential to change athlete training methods, the way sporting events are conducted, and the fan experience during the Olympic Games.
Merino-Madrid emphasized that technology must always serve sport, not the other way around. He added that this implies protecting athletes' data, ensuring fair competition, and guaranteeing that people understand how AI is being used. This framework provides the Olympic Movement with a common basis for confidently utilizing opportunities while preserving the integrity of athletes and values.
The IOC statement indicated that artificial intelligence is transforming sports, opening up possibilities in athlete support, Games operations, fan engagement, and the daily work of sports structures. However, the growing use of AI raises serious questions regarding fairness, athlete data, transparency, security, and accountability. These issues are particularly important in sports, where trust in competitions, decision-making, and the honesty of results is fundamental.
