Samsung recently unveiled the updated Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 model in India, coinciding with the launch of the Galaxy Z Fold 8 series. The author tested these smartwatches for some time and noted that Samsung did not just make minor changes to the old Ultra Watch, but released a significantly improved version. The main improvements are felt in terms of practicality, speed, display, and battery life.
Upon first contact with the Galaxy Watch Ultra 2, the user immediately notices its premium quality. The watch features a titanium casing and a very durable design, allowing it to be considered a sports watch capable of functioning in extreme conditions. However, it should be noted that this is a rather large gadget, and it might seem too big for people with small wrists who prefer thinner and lighter smartwatches.
Design and Build Quality of the Galaxy Watch Ultra 2
The author highly praised its rugged and unique appearance, although acknowledges that it may not appeal to everyone. The dome-shaped case design with a round display gives the watch recognizability. The built-in large action button is useful both during workouts and for quick access to functions, although the author believes Samsung could offer more customization options for this button.
If the user has the first version of the Galaxy Watch Ultra, the visual differences between the models might be unnoticeable, as the overall design language remains the same; the main changes concern the hardware. Among the drawbacks noted are the size and weight of the watch, which is about 61.5 grams, which is noticeable when worn. Furthermore, the price is quite high, and these watches are not just for checking time and notifications.
The author used the watch throughout the day, during sports activities, and at night while sleeping. Compared to the previous model, they seem thinner due to case optimization. The strap also became lighter and more comfortable, which is critically important for accurate health and sleep tracking, despite the large size still being felt at night.
Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 Display
The screen is one of the main strengths of these watches. It is equipped with a 1.5-inch Super AMOLED display with a brightness of up to 5000 nits. This is especially useful when using it in bright sunlight, as there is no need to create a shadow with your hand for clear viewing. Notifications, maps, training data, and watch faces are displayed clearly.
The screen resolution is 498x498 pixels, and the touch response is very smooth. Thanks to the new Snapdragon Wear Elite chipset, daily use has become faster: opening apps, switching screens, and starting workouts happen quickly. The watch is also equipped with 2 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage, providing enough space for applications.
Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 Battery
The most significant improvement, according to the author, is the battery. The Ultra 2 features an 800 mAh battery, which is larger than in the previous Ultra Watch. The company claims that the watch can operate for up to 60 hours with the Always-On display enabled and up to 80 hours with it disabled. Actual battery life depends on the intensity of GPS, LTE, workouts, and screen usage.
In real life, the watch does not require daily charging, making it more comfortable for constant wear. Although the battery drains faster with continuous GPS and workout use, in normal mode, it is noticeably better than in previous Galaxy Watches. Fast charging is also supported.
Health and Fitness of the Galaxy Watch Ultra 2
The Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 is not just a notification watch; Samsung has paid great attention to health and fitness. It integrates heart rate, ECG, body composition, temperature, barometer, and other sensors. The author focused on monitoring pulse, steps, workouts, and sleep.
During workouts, the watch provides quality data, allowing users to see heart rate, pace, and distance right on their wrist. Thanks to GPS support and multi-satellite system operation, tracking during running or cycling is improved. Samsung has enhanced outdoor and adventure capabilities, such as trail running tracking, which provides detailed information about ascents, altitude, and route during a run.
The watch has a 10ATM and IP69K rating, and also supports the EN13319 diving standard, meaning it is designed not only for the gym or office.
Software of the Galaxy Watch Ultra 2
The daily software experience was also good. The watch runs on Wear OS and is capable of effectively performing many tasks: viewing phone notifications, taking calls, replying to messages, controlling music, and using applications. The best interaction is achieved when used with a Samsung phone, as the devices are closely integrated with each other.
