SpaceX's Starship rocket successfully achieved Earth orbit trajectory during its fourteenth test mission. During this flight, 26 Starlink satellites were deployed. However, the mission had to be terminated significantly earlier than planned due to an engine malfunction.
After one of the engines on the super heavy booster failed, SpaceX decided to alter the original flight plan and directed the craft into the Pacific Ocean, near Hawaii, where it exploded. The flight was initially expected to last about ten hours but ended after only a little over three hours.
This flight was significant for Starship. Although 13 test flights had been conducted previously, this time the rocket managed to reach Earth orbit for the first time. In addition to achieving the goal of reaching space, 26 satellites were successfully placed into orbit. Nevertheless, the engine failure prevented the completion of the entire planned program.
According to the initial plan, Starship was supposed to fly over India, but this did not happen due to the premature end of the mission. The Starship rocket, which is 124 meters long, was launched on Monday from the Starbase in Texas, USA.
Immediately after launch, the super heavy booster separated from Starship, and the spacecraft continued its journey. The deployed satellites are part of SpaceX's internet network, which aims to expand internet access in various regions of the world. Despite the successful satellite deployment, the engine malfunction halted the further progress of the mission.
During the flight, Starship was supposed to complete several orbits around the Earth, including flying over India. But after the engine failure, SpaceX decided to shorten the mission, directing Starship into the Pacific Ocean near Hawaii, where the explosion occurred.
Although Starship could not complete the entire planned flight, reaching space and successfully launching 26 satellites were significant achievements. Furthermore, the premature termination of the flight showed that additional tests are necessary to ensure the full reliability of Starship.
SpaceX is developing Starship as a reusable rocket system intended for future missions to send humans to the Moon and Mars. NASA has also selected a special version of Starship for landing astronauts on the lunar surface as part of its Artemis program.
However, Starship still has many stages to go before achieving these goals. These include long-duration operations in space, refueling one vehicle with another, and safe return. The success achieved in the 14th test mission is an important step in this direction, but all these capabilities must be successfully demonstrated before humans are sent to the Moon.
