EU demands greater pressure on Russia to ensure the return of deported minors

The European Commissioner emphasized the need for greater pressure on Russia to ensure the return of deported minors. She mentioned the recent sanctions implemented by the European Union (EU) against individuals and entities involved in the transfer of these minors to Russian territory and subsequent forced assimilation.

During the conference titled 'Pathways to Peace,' held in Toronto, Canada, with the participation of Ukraine and Norway, Suica stated that persistence must be maintained. This meeting aims to promote the return of Ukrainian children, detained civilians, and prisoners of war who remain under Russian control.

The event, taking place today and Tuesday, brings together representatives from approximately 60 nations and ten international organizations. The main objective is to strengthen collaboration to identify and repatriate affected Ukrainian citizens, as well as facilitate their recovery and reintegration after returning to Ukraine.

In her statements to the press, Suica stressed that the European Commission allocated 50 million euros for programs aimed at minors. She clarified that the issue is not limited only to physical return, but also to how these minors will be reintegrated and rehabilitated upon their return.

This funding was announced by the European Commission in May to support the location, return, and reintegration of minors, as well as to strengthen protection, education, and access to justice systems.

Additionally, the EU Council imposed sanctions on ten individuals and seventeen entities linked to the deportation, coercive transport, and assimilation of Ukrainian children. Among those sanctioned are organizations and centers associated with indoctrination and militarized education programs.

According to official Ukrainian data cited by Canada, 20,651 potential cases of illegal deportation or forced transfer of minors have been registered since the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Of these cases, 2,573 children have managed to return from Russia or occupied territories.

The European Commissioner admitted that achieving new returns is challenging in a 'polarized international scenario.' Therefore, she advocated for a combined approach that includes funding, sanctions, and diplomatic pressure directed at Moscow, stating that 'we have to be present, we have to push, and we have to do what we can with the instruments at our disposal.'
