Doctor explains how mental stress can lead to heart attack and how to prevent the risk

In recent years, there has been a significant increase in the number of heart attacks. Although improper diet and unhealthy lifestyle are traditionally cited as the main causes, doctors also point to the danger of high levels of mental stress.

Medical professionals emphasize that psychological tension is extremely dangerous for the body and has a direct impact on the heart. In the context of modern fast-paced life, where people often work late, are in a state of constant stress, and suffer from lack of sleep, the general health gradually deteriorates.

Many people sacrifice sleep due to work pressure or long hours spent in front of screens. However, if this situation persists for a long time, it can negatively affect heart function. Lack of sleep and chronic stress can disrupt blood pressure and the hormonal balance related to mental state.

Those who spend most of their time sitting, skip meals, and avoid physical exercise pose a special risk. The combination of these habits with constant stress can contribute to the development of heart disease.

Dr. Asit Hanna, Director of the Interventional Cardiology Department at Yoshda Medicity Hospital, explained the mechanism of this process. He clarified that when mental tension arises, the balance of hormones such as cortisol is disrupted. This leads to an increased heart rate and elevated blood pressure.

High pressure puts a strain on the heart's vessels, causing them to narrow. As a result, the heart has difficulty receiving enough blood. In some cases, old plaques in the heart can rupture, leading to the formation of a thrombus that blocks blood flow and causes a heart attack. People who constantly experience stress are susceptible to this risk.

Symptoms may include severe chest pain radiating to the left arm; difficulty breathing; shortness of breath; sudden onset of cold sweats; and jaw pain.

To prevent heart disease, it is recommended to sleep for at least seven to eight hours every night. It is also important to engage in physical exercise for at least half an hour daily. If you experience chest pain, shortness of breath, or a rapid heartbeat, these symptoms should not be ignored. Furthermore, one should avoid mental tension by practicing yoga.
