Delivery and Taxi Partner Income: How Much They Earn and What Commissions Apply Monthly

In large cities, such as metropolises, delivery partners, bike-taxi drivers, and taxi drivers are often found, having become an integral part of city life by helping people get anywhere or order goods.

The monthly income, savings, and rules differ when working on delivery apps like Swiggy, Zomato, and Zepto, as well as ride-hailing apps such as Uber, Rapido, and Ola. Although increasing working hours can boost earnings, the net amount remaining after deducting fuel and maintenance costs varies.

The earning details on these platforms are predetermined: the income structure, bonuses, payment method, joining conditions, and safety rules include weekly payments, goal achievement bonuses, surge rates, required documents, an initiation fee, and insurance.

Part-time or full-time: which option yields more income?

For example, a delivery partner working part-time, spending 4–5 hours a day, can expect a total income of ₹9,000 – ₹15,000 per month. After deducting gasoline and maintenance costs, they might have ₹7,000 – ₹11,000 left in hand each month. With full-time work, meaning 8–10 hours a day, the projected total income is ₹20,000 – ₹30,000 per month, with a net saving of ₹15,000 – ₹22,000 per month.

Regarding bike-taxi drivers associated with Rapido or Uber, the total income can reach ₹18,000 – ₹28,000 per month when working 8–10 hours a day. After accounting for fuel and maintenance expenses, this amount may be ₹13,000 – ₹20,000 per month.

Car or taxi drivers working with Uber or Ola can earn a total income from ₹30,000 to over ₹50,000 per month by working 8–12 hours daily. Their net savings are estimated at ₹22,000 – ₹35,000 per month.

How are payments made?

It is important to understand that in the delivery service's income structure, payment is made per order based on the distance and time spent on it. Ride-hailing apps deduct their platform commission or service charge from the total fare. Some apps, such as Rapido, operate on a subscription model in certain states where the captain sets the direct price. A daily bonus for achieving a target number of orders or rides is accrued. During peak hours in the morning and evening, as well as in rainy weather or on weekends, a surge rate is applied.

Most companies, including Swiggy, Zepto, and Uber, make payments directly to a bank account weekly.

What is required to become a delivery partner?

It was previously reported that joining such platforms requires reaching a minimum age of 18 years. Mandatory requirements include possessing a driver's license and having at least 1–2 years of driving experience. Furthermore, there must be no records of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs in the last 3 years, nor should there be serious criminal cases pending or proven.

Required documents include an Aadhaar Card or Voter ID, PAN Card, a bank account, or a cancelled cheque. For motorcycle, scooter, or car documents, a license, Registration Certificate (RC), valid insurance, and a PUC certificate are required. For taxis or cars, a commercial permit and a technical condition check are also mandatory. An initiation fee of approximately ₹1,000 – ₹1,500 for a T-shirt and bag is charged upon registration with delivery services, which is deducted from payments in installments.

Overall, earnings in delivery and taxi services depend on the number of working hours, the type of work, and the payment model. It is also necessary to comply with the platform's requirements regarding age, experience, documents, and record. This system also offers weekly payments, bonuses, insurance, and identification within E-Shram.

Zepto Rider Discusses Earnings: Nighttime Delivery Pay Doubles

When you suddenly feel like cooking something special late in the evening or during the day, but lack cheese, spices, or vegetables, people often order goods through services like Zepto, Blinkit, or Instamart. These services allow you to receive necessary groceries at home in just 10 minutes.

Sometimes conversations happen with couriers while waiting for delivery. One such instance occurred with a Zepto rider who was delivering an order at ten in the evening. Stray dogs started barking around him, and after the narrator helped him, they began communicating.

The narrator asked the rider, named Ramesh, about the risks of working late hours. Ramesh acknowledged the risks but noted that the pay is higher at night. He explained in detail the income calculation system for a 10-minute nighttime delivery.

Ramesh stated that after nine o'clock in the evening, the commission doubles. Usually, for a package delivery within a radius of at least two kilometers, which takes place in the morning, afternoon, or evening, 50 rupees are paid. However, if the delivery must be made within a two-kilometer radius after eight or nine in the evening, the commission doubles, reaching 100 rupees for the same order as during the day.

He also added that if the distance increases, the commission can rise even further because the number of riders decreases at night. Furthermore, in case of bad weather, such as rain or a storm, the commission can exceed the doubled amount. Sometimes, when there is a shortage of riders due to a high volume of orders, the commission also increases.

Ramesh specified that with daily work for 8 hours, the net earnings can be around 1200 rupees. After deducting fuel or e-bike charging costs, the income ranges from 1000 to 1200 rupees. In 8 hours, he manages to complete about 15 deliveries, including both long and short ones. If two or three extra night orders are added, this is equivalent to the earnings from five daytime deliveries.
