Uzbekistan plans to commission 29 new municipal solid waste processing stations by 2026. This measure will allow for the cessation of operations at another 18 landfills. According to Sputnik data, reported in Tashkent on September 28, the launch of these stations will lead to the closure of 18 landfills covering a total area of 80.35 hectares.
These steps are part of a plan for the phased reduction of household waste landfills in the country. In accordance with the President's decree from February 16, the number of such landfills must be reduced by at least 50 percent by 2030.
Currently, 200 solid household waste landfills operate in the republic, covering a total area of 1,649 thousand hectares. This year, the reclamation of 18 landfills is planned in the Karakalpakstan Republic and 10 regions.
During reclamation, waste will be organized, covered with earth, and the territory will be restored. Work has currently been completed at four landfills in Namangan region (Chortoq and Yangiqorgon), Fergana region (Qushtepa), and in districts of Tashkent region (Bustonliq), where their operations have ceased.
Between 2024 and 2025, reclamation was carried out on an area of 255.34 hectares across 50 landfills. Subsequent stages include the reclamation of territories of 11 landfills in 2027, 9 landfills in 2028, and another 8 landfills in 2029.
