Bafana Bafana coach Pitso Mosimane highly praised Olwetu Mahanyi's performance with the national team. The return of Mbekezeli Mbokazi to full physical condition is also intended to strengthen Bafana Bafana's central defense, especially after Mahanyi's impressive first full match for the national team on Saturday afternoon.
Mahanyi played in central defense alongside Ime Okon during Bafana's 2-1 victory over Guinea at the Orlando Amstel Arena stadium. He looked confident, making timely tackles and demonstrating sharp tactical understanding of the game.
After moving to Scottish club Glasgow Rangers in the pre-season, Bafana coach Mosimane noted that Mahanyi had long deserved an official start, having previously debuted in a friendly match before the World Cup against Panama earlier this year.
Mosimane stated: 'I am happy that Mahanyi played, and we see his quality. He is a big guy. If he plays for Glasgow Rangers, he should play here too. So this is good.'
Provided that his injury did not prevent him from being in the squad, Mbokazi, who established a strong partnership with Okon at the World Cup, would likely start at his former home ground.
However, Mbokazi completed his full return to play for MLS team Chicago Fire on Sunday morning, showing no signs of unpreparedness and making a key interception near the goal line in the victory over Charlotte FC.
Mosimane expresses a desire to have both players, Mahanyi and Mbokazi, available for selection during the upcoming FIFA international window in November, which will expand his options and strengthen Bafana's defensive depth.
The coach added: 'Ime and Mahanyi did excellently. I am glad Mahanyi got his start. He didn't have many opportunities because Mbokazi was playing, but this is healthy competition. Let's create these opportunities.'
Mahanyi and Okon are expected to start again in central defense in Wednesday evening's match against Eritrea in Cairo. This pair's impressive performance could significantly hinder Mbokazi's return to the team after his recovery.
