According to IARC, low-dose CT lung screening reduces lung cancer mortality by 16%

According to an assessment by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), lung cancer mortality can be reduced through the use of computer tomography (CT) screening with low radiation doses. This method also helps detect the disease in its early stages among high-risk individuals.

The IARC working group established that screening using low-dose CT is capable of reducing the probability of death from lung cancer by 16% among individuals in a high-risk group. Furthermore, this screening helps decrease the number of cases at advanced stages III or IV.

Study shows peak rates of early cancer diagnosis and five-year survival in October

A team led by Thomas George and his colleagues from the University of Florida in Gainesville conducted a cross-sectional analysis focused on identifying oncological diseases and assessing survival rates associated with them. The study revealed consistent patterns correlating with specific months of the year.

The analysis utilized extensive data from the American registers NPCR and SEER, which cover all registered cases of cancer among the US population between 2001 and 2019. Over this twenty-year period, more than 30.18 million cases of oncological diseases were recorded.

Net relative survival was calculated using the Pohhar–Perme method. The findings were officially published in the scientific journal JAMA Network Open.
