Tennis player Maria Timofeeva from Uzbekistan won the WTA 125 Eupago Porto Open tournament, which took place in Porto, Portugal, on September 27.
In the final, top seed Maria Timofeeva defeated American Reese Brantmaier with a score of 7–6 (10–8), 6–2. This victory marks Timofeeva's twenty-second title in the WTA 125 series this season.
Thanks to this success, the 22-year-old Timofeeva will enter the world's top 70 tennis players for the first time, rising from the current rank of 87th to 68th, which is the best result of her career.
The first set was very tense. Brantmaier, ranked 385th in the world, managed to save five games, force a tie-break, and come close to winning the set. However, Timofeeva won the tie-break and then secured the first breaks in the second set, quickly increasing her advantage.
After the award ceremony, Timofeeva noted the difficulty of the final, especially the first set, calling it 'very even and exhausting.' She also expressed satisfaction with how she improved her level of play from match to match during the week in Porto.
The victory in Porto extended Timofeeva's winning streak in tournaments in Portugal to 17 matches. In 2025, she had already won titles in Figueira da Foz and Quinta do Lago, having qualified. In Porto, she managed to beat defending champion Teresa Valentova.
On her way to the final, Timofeeva defeated 17-year-old Slovak Mia Pohankova in the semi-finals with a score of 6–2, 6–7 (3–7), 6–3. This match lasted 2 hours and 38 minutes.
For 21-year-old Brantmaier, this final was her first in her professional career. The American qualified for the main tournament and defeated second seed Sindhu Kraus in the semi-finals.
Before starting her professional career, Brantmaier participated in the US college tennis system, where she won the team championship in 2023 and the individual championship in 2025.
Immediately after the tournament, Timofeeva will travel to Beijing, where she will participate in the main draw of the WTA 1000 tournament next week.
The tournament in Porto was held on hard courts at the Monte Aventino sports complex. The 28th edition of the Eupago Porto Open is organized by the Porto Tennis Association with the support of the Portuguese Tennis Federation.
