In an effort to avoid high prices for new cars, Brazilians are increasingly turning to used models, which can be found in price ranges from 10 thousand to 30 thousand reais. However, there is also a segment of cars priced around 5 thousand reais, the purchase of which carries a high risk of receiving a vehicle riddled with mechanical failures or documentation issues.
Specialists warn that repair costs, overdue taxes, and insurance can quickly exceed the amount paid for the car itself. Even among those considering purchasing such cheap transport, skepticism is evident.
Mechanics' opinion on low-budget cars
Ludovico, known as Pitucha, a mechanic and owner of the Pitucha Reparação Automotiva network, expressed disbelief at the existence of 5 thousand reais cars today. He noted that if such cars do exist, they will require a significant amount of maintenance.
According to him, vehicles in this price category likely have very high mileage, exceeding 200 or 300 thousand kilometers. This aligns with the natural lifespan of many engines, making a complete engine restoration a highly probable scenario. Problems are rarely limited to just the engine; during a major overhaul, the list of parts requiring replacement or repair can be extensive. The mechanic emphasized that maintenance costs are not currently low.
Pitucha also cautions that a well-maintained but older car, valued according to reference tables like Fipe, does not sell for less than twice that valuation. Any listing significantly below this level requires serious caveats.
He added: 'A person whose car is regularly maintained, regardless of age, will never sell it for 5 thousand reais. They will calmly sell such a car for at least 10 or 12 thousand. Regardless of how old or bad the vehicle is, if it is in order and owned by a careful owner, there will be no 5 thousand reais car.'
Risks related to documentation and law
Buyers who find a car for 5 thousand reais in good condition must exercise even greater vigilance. An excessively low price for a quality car may conceal unpaid taxes and fines deducted from the sale price. While this might be an agreement between the parties, it could also be a way to deceive the buyer.
Vehicles with legal problems are common. According to data collected by the Minas Gerais State Tax Service (SEF-MG), in 2024, over 4 million vehicles, representing 36% of the total fleet of 11.3 million, were in irregular status. In the same year, 639,184 vehicles in São Paulo received notifications regarding overdue tax payments.
An expired Certificate of Vehicle Registration (CRLV) is a serious violation, resulting in a fine of 293.47 reais, 7 points on the driver's license, and towing to an impound lot. Even if all paperwork is in order, the car can be confiscated. Cassio Pagliarini, an automotive market specialist from Bright Consulting, reminds that mechanical problems can legally prevent the vehicle from moving on public roads. If stopped by police or traffic patrol, such a car is likely to have some item rated as unsatisfactory, leading to fines and towing with subsequent costs and inconvenience.
To avoid legal problems, it is recommended to check the vehicle's history before concluding the deal.
Insurance problems
In the insurance market, a 5 thousand reais car requires special attention due to how insurance companies accept such vehicles. Daniel Rosendo, owner of Roseg Seguros, notes that a very old car or one with a history of accidents, auctions, or damage may face difficulties obtaining traditional insurance. Furthermore, coverage limits may be imposed or a different compensation amount set than expected.
There is also a financial aspect: for a vehicle of such low value, the cost of insurance may approach the price of the car itself, making protection uneconomical for those looking for a model in this price range. Therefore, Daniel advises potential buyers to contact an insurance agency before purchasing a 5 thousand reais car to find out if the vehicle is insurable, what types of coverage are available, and what the cost of protection will be.
Alternative: good cars from 10 to 12 thousand reais
To avoid such headaches or endless searching for the perfect and cheap car, one should raise the price threshold. Pitucha jokingly remarked that the only positive aspect of a 5 thousand reais car might be 'enriching the mechanic.'
In the mechanic's opinion, in the 10 to 12 thousand reais range, acceptable models can still be found. This is the same price category he calls the minimum price for an old but well-maintained car. Most of these cars have cosmetic defects. He gives examples from his circle: 'My close friend bought a Verona. I don't know the year, but it is very good. It has structure, it has everything. The only drawback is the paintwork, as it is all burnt. But from a mechanical point of view, it is a perfect car.'
He also mentioned his employee: 'My employee also bought an old Fiesta, round. He paid 10 thousand reais. The Fiesta is very good. Like the paintwork case, its paint is also burnt and the seats are heavily torn. But from a mechanical point of view, it is good.'
