Biltong & Bangers offers to acquire ProNutro after PepsiCo ceases production

After PepsiCo announced the withdrawal of ProNutro cereal from the market, which has been familiar to South African consumers for decades, the South African-based company Biltong & Bangers put forward an offer to purchase the brand. This gives hope to South Africans who did not want to say goodbye to ProNutro.

Biltong & Bangers is interested not only in the name itself. The company aims to acquire the original recipe, intellectual property, manufacturing know-how, and even the old equipment used to make the cereal.

On social media, Biltong & Bangers contacted PepsiCo with the question: 'Okay, PepsiCo, how much do you want?' Although the British company, which has been selling South African products since 2008, admits that cereal production is very different from its usual business, its offer caused a wide resonance.

South Africans began offering their expertise in production, tooling, supplier sourcing, and contracts, while others expressed willingness to invest if an attempt was made to revive ProNutro. This is an unexpected turn for a brand that seemed to have reached its end last week.

PepsiCo confirmed the decision to discontinue ProNutro after being unable to recreate the taste and texture associated with the original product by consumers. The new version of ProNutro had already been subject to a month of criticism from customers who complained that it was not the product they grew up with.

PepsiCo explained the changes in production that led to the new version, citing outdated infrastructure and unreliable production equipment. However, public reaction demonstrated how strong the attachment of South Africans to the original version is.

Now Biltong & Bangers wants to know if PepsiCo is willing to let someone else try to restore the brand. The company publicly invited PepsiCo to contact it regarding a possible sale, although there is still a long way between the social media offer and ProNutro returning to supermarket shelves.

PepsiCo discontinues ProNutro in South Africa after failed attempt to revive original taste

The manufacturer PepsiCo has officially announced the withdrawal of the iconic South African product ProNutro from sale. This decision was made after the company failed to recreate the taste and texture that consumers were familiar with and loved in the original version.

The announcement followed months after the company introduced 'New Generation ProNutro,' which included changes to the product's recipe, texture, and packaging.

In a statement published on Wednesday, PepsiCo emphasized that ProNutro has been part of daily life and family traditions in South Africa for many generations. Earlier this year, the company launched 'New Generation ProNutro' to keep the brand accessible to buyers while maintaining its nutritional properties and producing the product in a more environmentally friendly way.

However, the reformulated product drew criticism from some consumers, particularly regarding its taste and consistency. PepsiCo reported that after the launch, some buyers noted that the new experience did not meet expectations for ProNutro, specifically concerning taste, texture, and mixability.

The company stated that it carefully studied the feedback and sought ways to restore the original consumption experience but ultimately could not reproduce the taste and texture associated with the original ProNutro. After thorough analysis, PepsiCo made the difficult decision to discontinue the cereal in South Africa, thanking consumers for their long-term support of the brand.

The product withdrawal occurred after the launch of the new ProNutro recipe in April. PepsiCo promoted this new version as retaining the nutritional value of the cereal while offering a new consumer experience. Furthermore, the new product was designed to be more versatile and was advertised for both traditional consumption and mixing into shakes.

The changes triggered complaints among long-time ProNutro consumers regarding taste and texture. Previously, PepsiCo explained that the recipe adjustment was partly related to aging infrastructure and unreliable equipment operation, pointing to the need for updates in the production process to maintain product quality.
