The national team of Uzbekistan won a victory in the open section of the 46th Chess World Championship, held in Samarkand, securing gold for the second time.
In the final, eleventh round, Uzbekistan faced Ukraine. In the match, Nodirbek Yakubbaev drew with Igor Samunenkov, while Mukhiddin Madaminov defeated Roman Diktyarov. Javhohir Sindarov drew with Vasyl Ivanchuk, and the game between Nodirbek Abdusattorov and Igor Kovalenko also ended in a draw. Thanks to this, Uzbekistan won the match with a score of 2.5–1.5 and finished the tournament with 20 points.
Before the match against Ukraine, Uzbekistan had already secured first place. This was possible after India drew 2–2 with Hungary. After ten rounds, Uzbekistan led India by one point, having 18 points to India's 17.
India took second place with 18 points, and Germany also scored 18 points, finishing third after defeating the Netherlands with a score of 2.5–1.5.
For Uzbekistan, this is the second gold medal at the Olympic Games following their victory at the 2022 Olympics in Chennai. At the 2024 Games in Budapest, the team won bronze medals.
Thus, over the last three Chess World Championships, Uzbekistan has won the title twice and finished in third place once.
The Uzbekistan team in Samarkand included Javhohir Sindarov, Nodirbek Abdusattorov, Nodirbek Yakubbaev, Shamsiddin Vohidov, and Mukhiddin Madaminov. Former world champion Rustam Kasimdzhanov served as the team captain.
At the beginning of the tournament, Uzbekistan won all its first seven matches. In the decisive games, the team defeated India with a score of 2.5–1.5 and China with a score of 3–1. Uzbek chess players lost to Germany in the eighth round but then defeated the United States with a score of 2.5–1.5 and Armenia with a score of 3.5–0.5.
