He emphasized that in the case of the chairman of the selection committee, similar to referees, doctors, and commentators, many correct decisions go unnoticed, while one mistake is exaggerated many times over.
Sunil Gavaskar also highlighted an important aspect of the decision-making process within the selection committee. According to him, sometimes the decision is made not only by the chairman but also by other members of the committee. However, the responsibility for answering to the public lies solely with the chairman. Gavaskar writes that in such situations, the role of other selectors remains hidden, while only the chairman accepts public criticism. This is why every decision in this position becomes a difficult test.
Ajit Agarkar became the chief selector of the Indian team in 2023. During his tenure, India reached the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup. Furthermore, the team won titles in major tournaments such as the T20 World Cup 2024, T20 World Cup 2026, and the Champions Trophy 2025. During Agarkar's time, the selection committee had to make several important decisions, especially regarding the growing competition for a spot in the team and the future of senior players. This responsibility will now fall on the new chief selector.
The new chairman of the selection committee will begin his term at a time when the Indian team's schedule will be very tight. The team must play five T20 International matches, three ODI matches, and two Tests in the tour of New Zealand.
