Indian team to reach the quarterfinals of the 2026 Asian Games against Afghanistan

The Indian men's cricket team will play its quarterfinal match against the Afghanistan team at the 2026 Asian Games in Nagoya, Aichi. This match is scheduled for Monday, September 28, at Korogi Sports Park, starting at 10:30 Indian time.

Because the group match between Nepal and Japan, held on Saturday, September 26, was cancelled due to rain, the Afghanistan team managed to advance to the quarterfinals. Meanwhile, Nepal also advanced to the quarterfinals, where it will face Sri Lanka on September 29.

Nepal finished first in Group A with three points, while Afghanistan placed second with two points. The Japanese team scored only one point and thus dropped out of the race for the quarterfinals. It should be noted that India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka were given a direct ticket to the quarterfinals. In contrast, Nepal, Japan, Afghanistan, Oman, Malaysia, and Hong Kong had to play group matches.

The match between Japan and Nepal at Korogi Sports Park was interrupted by rain and extended to 15 overs. Nepal, having lost the toss, batted first and scored 149 runs losing one wicket in the allotted 15 overs. However, the rain resumed, and the match had to be concluded without a winner being determined.

Although the draw took place on time, the match started about an hour late due to the wet pitch. After the game began, the Indian batsmen took advantage of the opportunity to play a match with fewer overs and started scoring quickly. The main heroes of the match were Lokesh Bum and Sandeep Jora. Both batsmen scored half-centuries without getting out, which helped the team achieve a strong score.

Lokesh Bum demonstrated a powerful performance, scoring 52 not out off just 22 balls, including six fours and one six. At the other end, Sandeep Jora also performed excellently, scoring 57 not out, using five fours and three sixes, in 32 balls. Thanks to the aggressive play of both, Nepal was able to score quickly in the final overs.

Earlier in the tournament, Nepal defeated Afghanistan by 5 wickets. In turn, the Japanese team suffered a defeat at the hands of Afghanistan by a score of 48 runs.

Indian Hockey Team to Face South Korea; Decisive Match for Title Defense

The Indian hockey team, aiming to defend its title at the Asian Games, started the tournament very strongly, securing two victories and scoring 29 goals in the group stage. However, the upcoming match against South Korea will be the first serious test of its readiness.

India began with a triumph, defeating Indonesia 13-1 and Sri Lanka 16-1. Although the Indian forward line demonstrated incredible scoring ability in these matches, the encounter with Korea will be different. India ranks eighth in the world rankings, while Korea is ranked twenty-first, but Korea's track record at the Asian Games does not allow the opponent to be underestimated.

Korea is a four-time Asian Games champion and won the bronze medal in the last tournament. Thus, the match scheduled for Thursday is not just a group game for India, but the first serious test on the path to the title.

In the first two games, the Indian team attracted attention with its attack. The team's top scorer, forward Dilpreet Singh, scored seven field goals. Jugraj Singh is also in excellent form, having scored four goals against Sri Lanka via penalty and free kick. Furthermore, charismatic forward Abhishek demonstrated his sharpness by scoring a hat-trick against Sri Lanka. This indicates that India is not lacking in goal-scoring players.

However, the main question concerns the defense. Despite victories over Indonesia (13-1) and Sri Lanka (16-1), the Indian team conceded one goal in both matches. This is why India's defense will face its first serious test against Korea.

Head coach Craig Fulton also noted the need to improve penalty conversion. Against Sri Lanka, India earned 12 corners but managed to convert only five into goals. This statistic could become a decisive factor for India in a major tournament like the Asian Games. When given chances against a team of Korea's caliber, it is crucial to capitalize on opportunities.

Recently, India did not achieve the expected results at the FIH World Cup held in the Netherlands and Belgium, finishing in eighth place. Now the team has a chance to overcome this disappointment and qualify directly for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics through the Asian Games. The team that wins the gold medal at the Asian Games will receive a direct pass to the Los Angeles Olympics.

Therefore, for India, it is not just about defending the title, but also about an Olympic ticket. Fulton previously stated that the lessons learned at the World Cup must be applied on the field. He emphasized that the team identified its weaknesses after the World Cup, and the next goal is to implement the necessary adjustments in the game.

In this tournament, involving 12 teams, the top two teams from each group will advance to the semi-finals. After the match against Korea on Saturday, India will play against the host nation and the previous cycle's silver medalist, Japan. The last group stage match will take place on September 28 against Bangladesh. Although the match against Bangladesh is considered relatively easy, the matches against Korea and Japan will show India's true colors.

By scoring 29 goals in two matches, India has declared its intentions. Now it must prove that it is not just a goal-scoring machine, but also possesses the strength to defend the title in difficult confrontations.

India wins match against Japan by two runs despite low score

Despite the perceived large gap between India and Japan, the match at Sanno International Stadium on Tuesday, played in a five-over format, completely changed perceptions of the upcoming rivalry. The Japanese team, whom many considered incapable of facing Indian bowlers, managed to keep India under pressure until the final delivery. Ultimately, India won by only two runs, but this result raised several questions.

One of the most significant issues was Vaibha Suryavanshi's inability to participate in the match. Due to rain, the game was shortened to five overs. Under these conditions, India kept its starting pair of Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma, leaving Vaibha out of the squad. Abhishek returned after coming onto the field without scoring a single run, while Samson managed only 9 runs.

India had the option of using Vaibha for an aggressive game approach, but the team management decided to stick with the established starting combination. The situation was complicated by the fact that the Indian attack stumbled, losing four batsmen while scoring 32 runs in five overs.

Since Vaibha Suryavanshi was not in the squad, he was seen on the field during the match distributing water to the players. The young batsman, from whom bright shots were expected, served solely as a 'water boy' in this game. He was visible on the field handing water to the players, and his facial expression was captured by the camera.

This match also held significance in the context of celebrating the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and Japan. Both teams are preparing for participation in the Asian Games, where India is scheduled to start its tournament in the quarterfinals. Thus, this confrontation served as an opportunity for India to test its readiness for the Asian Games.

When the match was shortened to five overs due to rain, the question naturally arose as to why the young and explosive batsman Vaibha Suryavanshi was not used. However, the Indian team retained the opening pair of Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma, and Vaibha did not get a spot in the squad. The result was the halting of India's score at 32 runs against the Japanese spinners.

The problem for the Indian batsmen was not the strength of the known bowlers, but the Japanese spinners, against whom it was expected that the Indian players would hit powerfully. The pitch was humid, and the ball spun more than expected, which became a weapon for the Japanese bowlers.

Charlie Hara edged Abhishek Sharma for zero. Abhishek attempted a slog sweep but lost his timing. Following this, Ibrahim Takahashi forced Samson to play in the air for 9 runs, and he was caught at mid-wicket. Ishan Kishan also returned with three runs; he continued to try hitting against constant spin and was caught at mid-off.

Captain Shreyas Iyer scored 16 runs, but even he could not play freely due to the slow pace and spin of the pitch. In the Indian innings, only three-quarters were scored.

With such a small target of 32 runs, one might have assumed India would finish the match by several runs. However, in this unusual five-over contest, this small score became a pressure point for India. In the third over, Ravi Bishnoi earned 10 runs for Japan, and Washington Sundar conceded seven runs in the fourth over. In the last over, Japan needed only eight runs.

It was the experienced Akshar Patel who saved India. With over 150 IPL matches of experience, Akshar did not give the Japanese batsmen a chance to flourish in the last over. He placed the ball in such a way that Shirai Patmore and Benjamin Ito-Davis were unable to hit powerful shots.

Due to the rain, the pitch was also slow, which complicated matters for Japan. On the last delivery of Japan, a boundary was required, but Akshar Patel prevented this. Shirai Patmore tried to hit over the line, but the ball hit the pad and went towards the fine leg, and the batsman could only run one run. Thus, Japan's hope for a historic comeback ended, and India won a very tense match by a margin of two runs. Disappointment was evident on the faces of the Japanese batsmen, as they were confident they were very close to one of the greatest turns in cricket.

The drama in the last over intensified when umpire Chris Torgate called two wide balls against Patmore, who was attempting a reverse slog. India's captain Shreyas Iyer expressed disagreement with the on-field umpire Chris Brown. The decision on the second wide was ultimately overturned. This meant that in the final moments of the match, India was fighting not only against the Japanese batsmen but also against the decisions of the umpires.

Vaibha remained out of the game, but the match raised a second question.

Shreyas Iyer hinted at the possible inclusion of Vaivava Suryavanshi in the squad for the third T20 match

India has taken a 2-0 lead in the three-match T20 series against Afghanistan. The third and final match is scheduled for September 17 (Thursday) at Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi. Following the securing of victory in the series, the probability of changes in the Indian team's squad increases.

15-year-old Vaivava Suryavanshi was not in India's starting lineup in the first two T20 matches. In the first match, Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma batted at the top order, and the Indian team retained the same starting six in the second match.

After the game, Shreyas Iyer stated that the team aims to give all players an opportunity to adapt to the field and conditions, as well as gain experience from practice matches. Therefore, there is a possibility of giving a chance to players who have been outside the squad so far, and some changes in the team combination may also occur.

Thus, the path is open for 'Baby Boss' to get a chance to play in the third T20 match. Previously, Vaivava demonstrated excellent performance in the T20 series against Zimbabwe, winning the 'Player of the Series' title with 151 runs. Despite this, he had to remain on the bench in the first two matches against Afghanistan.

Now all attention is focused on the match on September 17. If the team management decides to make changes, Vaivava may get his first chance to play an international T20 match in India.

Currently, Vaivava has scored 193 runs in 6 matches for India, with an average strike rate of 189.21, including two half-centuries. In these six games, Vaivava hit 16 fours and 14 sixes.
