The governor of the province stated that the completion and opening of the Shams of Tabriz mausoleum in Khoi will be a significant achievement for cultural diplomacy and tourism in Western Azerbaijan.
During a meeting dedicated to coordinating the opening ceremony on Wednesday, Governor Reza Rahmani characterized this national project as a symbol of the mystical and cultural identity of the province, emphasizing that its completion goes beyond a mere infrastructural achievement.
Rahmani noted that the complex will be equipped with modern facilities, such as a specialized library and exhibition halls, and will be able to host major international events, including events dedicated to Shams of Tabriz and Rumi.
He suggested that this project has the potential to attract foreign tourists and present Iran's intangible cultural heritage to an international audience.
Rahmani also highlighted the transit potential of the province, pointing out that its borders, due to proximity to Europe and current restrictions on international flights, could create opportunities for increased cross-border movement and economic activity. He specifically emphasized the need to strengthen infrastructure, particularly airport capacities.
Shams of Tabriz (1185–1248) was a 13th-century Persian mystic whose teachings deeply influenced Jalal ad-Din Rumi. He is the namesake of Rumi's collection 'Divan-e Shams-e Tabrizi' and is traditionally associated with Rumi's spiritual transformation. The city of Khoi, located in the province of Western Azerbaijan, has historically served as a crossroads of culture and trade.
