Continuous rainfall has been occurring in the Nepal and Bagaha region for the past twenty-four hours, resulting in a rise in the water level of the Gandak River. Residents living along the riverbanks are growing concerned amid the incessant downpour and the ongoing heavy rainfall warning in Nepal.
A heavy rainfall warning has been issued for Friday and Saturday in Nepal. Considering the current weather conditions, the Nepal Police and the Nepali Army are monitoring sensitive areas to alert the public. Citizens are being urged to avoid going near the river and to exercise caution regarding the weather.
This continuous rain is being felt from the Terai region of Nepal to the Bagaha region of West Champaran. This rain has increased the pressure on rivers and water sources, and the water level of the Gandak River is also rising. In view of the rising water level of the Gandak River, residents of villages situated along the riverbanks have also become vigilant, and rural inhabitants in low-lying areas are constantly monitoring the river's water level. If the rain continues, there is a possibility of further increase in the water level of the Gandak.
After an increase in the water flow at the Kosi Barrage, 31 gates have been opened. According to Ishwari Prasad Aryal, the Chief District Officer of Sunsari, the current water flow measured at the barrage is 2 lakh 40 thousand cusecs, and a red alert has been issued.
Aryal also mentioned that in previous years, the Kosi has seen a water flow exceeding 5 lakh cusecs. He assured that there is no need to panic at the moment, although the administration is fully alert. He also clarified that traffic passing through the Kosi bridge has not been stopped yet, and there is currently no situation to halt vehicles, but decisions will be made as necessary if the water flow increases.
Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department has urged high vigilance in low-lying coastal areas and flood-prone locations in the coming days, given the continuous rise in the flood level of the Saptakoshi.
