The highest decision-making body of the Anglican Church of South Africa rejected a proposal concerning allowing Anglican churches to pray for members in registered same-sex unions.
The movement, initiated by the Diocese of False Bay, was dismissed at the Provincial Synod this week. The vote showed that 78 people voted against, 71 in favor, and 10 abstained.
The proposal was put forward by Dr. Ashley Petersen and supported by Bishop False Bay Stafford Moses. It called for the Synod to permit prayers for church members in same-sex unions within the Anglican Church of South Africa (ACSA). It also suggested presenting a report on the perception of this ministry at the next Provincial Synod.
The text of the movement noted that previous church decisions could cause pain to those seeking recognition, inclusion, and pastoral care.
During the synod, Archbishop Cape Town Thabo Mgoba called for greater inclusion in the church. He mentioned the prayers the church already offers, stating: 'We pray for trees, we pray for cars, we pray for avocados,' in response to the question about including LGBTQ+ members.
A second motion, submitted by the Diocese of Johannesburg, concerned the creation of a separate liturgy to meet the pastoral needs of the LGBTQ+ community. This movement specifically aimed to separate such a liturgy from marriage, thanksgiving for marriage, vow confirmation, and blessing of civil unions.
This second proposal was rejected by an even wider majority: 98 people voted against, 61 in favor, and 10 abstained. The votes took place during Mgoba's last Provincial Synod as archbishop.
Opening the Synod on Sunday, September 20, 2026, Mgoba addressed the delegates, saying: 'Since this is my last Synod,' before thanking his family for their support during his years leading the church.
