Researchers Adam Levkowicz from Brown University and his team completed a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized trials. The analysis demonstrated that intravenous forms of iron preparations are more effective than oral ones for treating women with iron deficiency anemia during pregnancy.
To conduct the study, a search was performed in databases such as Embase, Scopus, Ovid MEDLINE, and Cochrane. The search period covered the time from February 2018 to May 2025. The team combined the obtained data with the results of a meta-analysis conducted in 2019.
The final work included 29 randomized controlled trials, involving a total of 11,771 pregnant women. Based on this data, pooled weighted mean differences and relative risks were calculated. The results of this study were published in the journal JAMA Network Open.
