Volkswagen Caminhões e Ônibus presented the Constellation 33.540 6x4, a heavy-duty truck specifically designed to handle severe off-road conditions, with a strong focus on the agricultural sector. This vehicle has a Combined Gross Weight (GCW) of 91 tons and a Maximum Tractive Capacity (MTC) of 125 tons. However, the manufacturer reports that, upon inquiry, the unit can support up to 150 tons in specific applications.
The development of this model was influenced by Contran Resolution 872/2021, which serves as the basis for the VW's design. This resolution regulates the circulation of cargo vehicle combinations whose GCW ranges between 74 and 91 tons, intended for sugarcane transport. The maximum limit of the new Constellation exactly corresponds to this ceiling established by the standard.
Legislation requires that the composition includes a 6x4 tractor truck whose MTC is equal to or greater than the total weight of the set, along with a three-axle semi-trailer and a five-wheel trailer. To circulate, this combination requires a special transit authorization valid for one year and must maintain dimensions between 28 and 30 meters.
There are also defined operational restrictions: the permitted route cannot exceed 80 kilometers, the maximum speed is limited to 60 km/h, convoys are prohibited, and only duly qualified drivers may operate this type of vehicle. It is in this specific segment, characterized by short routes between plantations and mills, that the manufacturer concentrates its efforts.
The engine installed under the cabin is the new D26 Ultra, which delivers 540 horsepower and features an exclusive calibration for off-road use. According to VW itself, in addition to the power increase, this unit can generate fuel savings of up to 5%, a relevant factor for fleets operating continuously at full load.
The manufacturer stated that it conducted over one million kilometers of resistance tests under extreme conditions before making the model available to the public. During this process, reinforcements were implemented on the chassis, a new radiator protection suitable for rigorous use, a reinforced fifth wheel for heavy loads, and a new coupling ramp, elements that the company associates with greater safety and component longevity.
To handle rough terrain and common access points to agricultural activities, the truck was equipped with elevated suspension and a greater approach angle. Internally, the pneumatic suspension now features automatic adjustment and new damping profiles, an alteration focused on providing greater comfort to the driver during long journeys.
Finally, the manufacturer opted not to disclose details such as engine torque, the truck's selling price, or the expected date for the start of commercial sales.
