The powerful number 8 player Jasper Wiese will earn his 50th appearance for the Springboks during the match against Australia in Perth. He agreed to come off the bench as Rassie Erasmus requires a dynamic 'backup' option in the rotating squad.
Wiese will mark his 50th match in Perth on Sunday, just five years after his debut in test matches against Georgia. This rapid progress reflects the significance he has gained within the Bok team structure.
The 30-year-old athlete has averaged participation in 10 test matches annually since his debut in 2021. However, in 2025, he missed four games due to disqualification after receiving a card for a header against an Italian player in Port Elizabeth.
Wiese is so established at number 8 that there is constant discussion about who might replace him in case of injury. There are no clear successors yet, although Cameron Hanekom demonstrated in the third and fourth matches against the All Blacks that he is among the contenders.
The team also has veteran Quagg Smith, but he will not play this year due to a serious injury, and he will turn 34 next year. Another contender is Evan Roos, but he has not received much attention in Rassie Erasmus's plans.
Duane Vermeulen, who played with Wiese before becoming his coach, believes that much more can await this strong player. He stated: 'It's amazing. Time has flown by very quickly because he reached this milestone much faster than I did. He is a wonderful player and a true pillar of the team. In the last couple of years, he has become a leader of the main group. He is your man when you need a breakthrough, and he plays really well. It's a fantastic achievement, and I look forward to even more from him.'
However, Wiese will mark his 50th match in an unusual way: Erasmus has named him as a substitute for the Perth match. Since Marco van Staden is undergoing fitness checks at number 8, Erasmus sees Wiese as a valuable reserve in the Springboks squad, which includes significant changes compared to the team that participated in the Rugby's Greatest Rivalry series.
Rassie Erasmus noted: 'Usually, we want a player like Jasper to start the game, but we feel that with the squad we have selected, we might get an impetus at the beginning, and everything will go well.' He continued: 'But, of course, we are playing against Australia on foreign soil. They beat Argentina and crushed Japan, and immediately after us, they play in the Bledisloe Cup against New Zealand. I think they are in the process of finding their form. We would like Jasper to start, but we feel we need some reliability on the bench.'
Erasmus felt that Wiese's willingness to accept a role that would lead to him coming onto the field later than usual speaks to how much he has developed as a leader. He emphasized: 'We are quite confident that the players who start will be energetic, and there may be some issues with combinations, so Wiese's agreement to play as a substitute is a sign of what kind of person he is.' He added: 'He actually speaks more now than before, and he has become a great leader in our team. Jasper was also a good option for a captain in such a game, but we felt he is a good guy to correct mistakes if something goes wrong. He agreed that coming on as a substitute would be best for the team in this game.'
Vermeulen also expects that the 50-match milestone will not be the end of Wiese's contribution. He concluded: 'This is a big achievement. There is still a lot ahead.'
