The first human burials have been discovered at the famous archaeological site of Göbekli Tepe. Archaeologists had previously conducted excavations during which these burials were identified.
Two graves were found, which are presumed to have been placed under the floors of buildings during the pre-ceramic Neolithic period. In one of these graves, according to the initial context, there was the skeleton of an adult. In the second grave, the remains of three people were found; their skulls were located in one of the corners of the pit, and the bones of the postcranial skeleton were either in the center or against one of the walls.
According to the information presented in the article published in PLoS One, the age of these burials is estimated to be the 9th millennium BCE.
