This year, 47 Indian hotels have been recognized in the Michelin Guide 2026 list. Among them are 30 'One-Key' category hotels, 15 'Two-Key' category hotels, and two 'Three-Key' category hotels. It is worth noting that globally, the Michelin Guide has recognized 2,832 hotels across 79 destinations worldwide, which currently includes 2,020 'One-Key' hotels, 657 'Two-Key' hotels, and 155 'Three-Key' hotels.
The Michelin Key should be considered an analogue to the 'Michelin Star' in the hotel industry. Although the Michelin Guide has long recommended hotels, the 'Key' system was launched in 2024 to promote properties offering an exceptional stay experience. Obtaining a 'Key' no longer depends solely on high cost, the presence of a luxurious lobby, or self-designation as five-star; a very strict procedure has been developed for this.
Anonymous Michelin inspectors focus on five key aspects: architecture and interior design, quality and consistency of service, individuality and character, value for money, and the hotel's contribution to the environment or local area. The rating is divided into three levels. According to the official website, this system is not merely a ladder of luxury or price category. The Guide's overall hotel list now comprises over 9,400 properties, of which 2,832 have received the 'Key' award.
In the highest 'Three Keys' category, prestigious hotels such as Taj Lake Palace in Udaipur and Taj Falaknuma Palace in Hyderabad maintain their status. The 'Two Keys' list features many well-known establishments within India's elite hospitality circle, including The Oberoi Amarvilas in Agra, Amanbag in Alwar, Sujan Jawai in Bisalpur, Sitarah Himalaya in Manali, The Oberoi Vindhyavilas Wildlife Resort in Bandhavgarh, and The Kumaoon in Almora. Additionally, this list includes Raffles and The Leela Palace from Jaipur, The Imperial and The Leela Palace from New Delhi, Aman-i-Khas from Ranthambore, Six Senses Fort Barwara and Sujan Sher Bagh from Sawai Madhopur, as well as Raffles and The Oberoi Udaivilas from Udaipur.
The 'One Key' list encompasses a rich and diverse array of Indian hotels, covering historical palace hotels, city landmarks, boutique hotels, wildlife sanctuaries, and tranquil mountain destinations. This list includes Narendra Bhawan in Bikaner, Rajas Mahal Palace Ras in Jaipur, Taj Devi Ratna Resort & Spa, The Johri, The Oberoi Rajvilas, and Anantaya Jewel Bagh in Rajasthan, Sujan The Sarai in Jaisalmer, Mharo Khet in Jodhpur, Ras Devigarh, and Manuscript Jhalwara Haveli in Udaipur.
