A memorable moment occurred during the thrilling final of last season's Betway SA20 tournament in Newlands. While Tristan Stubbs from Sunrisers Eastern Cape celebrated after his team reached the final, his partner and former classmate from Grey High School, Matthew Brightske, was seen putting a finger to his lips. Although Brightske later admitted he felt a bit awkward about his behavior in the tense moment, which Stubbs also subtly hinted at, Brightske explained that it was a signal to his critics who were questioning his abilities.
The 27-year-old athlete has always been characterized by self-confidence, and now, moving to the international level, he aims to take on the responsibility of a player whom the Proteas rely on in critical match moments. Brightske exclusively told IOL Sport before the start of the ODI series against Australia, beginning on Thursday at Kingsmead: 'I am more like someone who just gets the job done. Especially in South Africa, where they play on such tricky pitches that you can't just say: 'Okay, in 50 overs of cricket we will aim for 380,' because that mindset won't work.'
He continued, speaking about the pressure: 'Can you handle the pressure: it rolls a little, it bites a little, can you absorb it? You have to know your job around it. So for me, I just love doing the job, playing by the conditions, and doing whatever is necessary for victory. That's what needs to be done.'
These words are easy to dismiss as empty talk if Brightske's statistics didn't confirm them convincingly. The stylish right-handed batsman began his career in Lahore in February 2025, scoring 150 runs against New Zealand—the highest score of any player in a debut ODI in the history of the format. After that, he scored 83 runs against Pakistan in the same three-match series, and then continued his journey, achieving four scores over 50, a feat unattainable by anyone in the history of the format. In his first 14 ODIs, he has an average of 59.16 with a strike rate of 96.59.
The Proteas' middle order includes many worthy contenders. Last year, Brightske performed particularly well in the series against the Australians, registering impressive 88 runs off 78 balls in the second ODI, which secured the Proteas' victory in Mackay. He looks forward to resuming the rivalry with their arch-rivals.
'I am excited. I think it's epic that the Australians are coming here. They are a big nation full of big personalities in their team,' he stated. 'So they want to come here and obviously dominate us on our home ground. They are preparing for the World Cup next year, so they will be studying the conditions and implementing some, I don't know, psychological game. They want to scare us so that we have some mental problem next year. So I have a lot going on personally, but I just want to score runs.'
