Ed Sheeran has faced growing criticism from climate activist Greta Thunberg and children's educator Ms Rachel. This criticism arose amid an escalating conflict related to rapper Macklemore's exclusion from the singer's American tour.
Thunberg accused Sheeran of 'lacking principle,' while Ms Rachel urged the public to focus attention on children suffering in Gaza, Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
This resonance followed Macklemore's removal from the remaining dates of Sheeran's US tour. The reason was that during a performance at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, he made open statements in support of Palestine. Sheeran insists that the decision to exclude Macklemore was made by the tour promoter and venues, not by him personally.
This dispute has evolved into a broader discussion about the responsibility of artists with large audiences when speaking out about the genocide in Gaza and other humanitarian crises.
Greta Thunberg's View
Thunberg joined this debate, stating that Sheeran must be held accountable for how he handled the situation. She emphasized: 'Ed Sheeran must answer for his lack of principle.'
She argued that people with significant public platforms and access to resources have a greater duty to act. Thunberg noted: 'The bigger your platform and access to resources, the greater your responsibility.' Furthermore, she called on people to go beyond mere statements and support measures such as boycotts, sanctions, and divestment.
These comments came against the backdrop of Sheeran's attempts to explain his position regarding the genocide in Gaza and the Macklemore scandal. Sheeran stated that he is 'horrified' by the suffering caused by the conflict between Israel and Palestine, calling it a human tragedy. He also noted that he does not wish to turn his concerts into political platforms, but stressed that his decision to keep the show focused on music should not be interpreted as indifference to civilian suffering.
Ms Rachel's Statement
Children's educator and YouTube star Ms Rachel (whose real name is Rachel Akcursio) also commented on the conflict. She strongly urged people not to forget the children and civilians affected by the genocide. She said: 'Just a reminder of who we need to focus on. We need to focus on the children and people suffering in the ongoing genocide.'
Ms Rachel mentioned Keenan, noting that his entire family was killed, and highlighted a new acronym used in Gaza. She explained: 'WCNSF - Witnessed Child Without Surviving Family.' This acronym refers to children who have been injured without surviving relatives.
Previously, Ms Rachel used her large social media platform to highlight the issues of children affected by the genocide in Gaza. She expanded her commentary to include children suffering in other parts of the world, including Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). She put forward the thesis that the international response to suffering can differ depending on the race of those affected.
She stated: 'When white children suffer, the world unites to help them and speak out.' Ms Rachel accused privileged people of turning away from children suffering elsewhere. She added: 'Children in Sudan, Gaza, and the DRC are dying, suffering, and starving, while comfortable and privileged people look away. This is racism, and I find it disgusting.'
Explosive Dispute Over Macklemore's Tour
The conflict involving Sheeran and Macklemore began after the rapper spoke out about Palestinians during his performance on September 4th at MetLife Stadium. Macklemore is an open supporter of Palestinians and has used his performances to discuss the genocide in Gaza. Following his comments, he was excluded from the remaining dates of Sheeran's US tour.
