Joanna Vetrik apologized to spectators, fellow participants, and organizers of HYROX following an incident during the HYROX race in Beijing. She expressed regret for not leaving the course when she felt unwell.
The Australian professional hybrid athlete and fitness trainer fell ill at the beginning of this month while participating in the HYROX event in Beijing, China. According to reports, Vetrik experienced an acute episode of involuntary intestinal incontinence during the race.
In a personal statement, the athlete stated that she felt 'absolutely healthy and energetic' at the start of the competition and did not expect to become ill. However, looking back, she admitted that she should have made the decision to stop participating.
She took responsibility for continuing the race and apologized to those affected by the incident. Adding to her apologies, she stated: 'I know my actions affected not only me, and I sincerely regret everyone who was harmed.'
As a result, she decided to retroactively withdraw from the Beijing race and forfeit her earned points. The athlete noted that this experience served as an important reminder that there is more in life than competitions, and sometimes knowing when to stop is more important than finishing.
She added that she is learning from this situation, including understanding when it is necessary to step aside. Jo also thanked everyone who supported her after the incident, noting that the kindness received means more to her than words can express. She currently plans to take a break from public life to recover, reflect, and focus on herself and her family.
