The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) reported a significant response from prospective applicants, receiving over 51,000 applications in just the first four days of the 2027 application cycle.
According to NSFAS data, 51,474 applications were received, indicating high demand for financial support among students seeking access to higher education and learning. The system noted that the early application figures underscore NSFAS's ongoing importance in providing educational access to deserving South African students, as well as reflecting growing awareness of state financial aid.
According to the latest application panel statistics, first-year students and future applicants accounted for the largest share, with their applications reaching 43,297. Additionally, 6,865 applications were submitted by applicants for Further Education and Training (FET) programs, and 1,312 applications were submitted by senior applicants seeking funding opportunities.
NSFAS specified that 12,625 applicants indicated they are recipients of grants from the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA), while 52 applications were received from students with disabilities. Women constitute the majority of applicants, submitting 38,121 applications, which accounts for 74.06%, compared to 13,353 applications from men, or 25.94%.
Most applications come from individuals aged between 18 and 29 years old, which, according to NSFAS, demonstrates sustained demand for financial assistance among learners and future students transitioning from secondary to post-school education and training.
NSFAS warns against extensions
An NSFAS representative, Ishmael Mnisi, expressed satisfaction with the level of participation after the opening of the application period. NSFAS also reported significant progress in processing the received documents. The application period closes on October 31, 2026, and the NSFAS Council has already announced that there will be no extensions.
Mnisi urged applicants to ensure that all necessary supporting documents are provided correctly and that consent forms are completed where required for verification. Applicants can apply online through the NSFAS website or use the NSFAS mobile application available for Android and Apple devices. The system promised to continue providing regular updates on trends and application processing status throughout the period, as part of its commitment to transparency and stakeholder engagement.
