Unlike previous generations, who preferred a more private and reserved approach to relationships, the current Generation Z openly and shamelessly discusses their romantic connections. The style of Gen Z dating is distinct, and they have long been using dating apps. The risk of choosing a partner through such an application may be the highest for this generation. Apps like Bumble and Tinder have proven quite reliable for this age group.
However, there are people who do not need a partner—perhaps they are recovering from a breakup, are very busy with their careers, or are avoiding any commitments. In such cases, when they get bored, they create profiles on dating apps looking for a partner just to pass the time. This is where the concept of 'Dopamine Dating' emerges.
Dopamine Dating means using dating apps (such as Tinder and Bumble) not in search of serious relationships or deep connection, but exclusively to kill time, alleviate boredom, or gain instant validation. When a match appears or a message arrives on the app, 'dopamine' is released in the brain—a hormone that causes pleasant sensations, bringing a temporary feeling of well-being.
Although using dating apps solely for entertainment seems like an easy way to spend free time, it can have very serious negative consequences.
Negative Impact on Mental Health
Lowered Self-Esteem: When a person starts depending on the 'right swipe' or compliments from others, they tend to underestimate themselves if they do not receive matches. This generates many questions in the mind and leads to self-doubt, which has a strong impact on mental health.
Habituation to 'Ghosting' and Rejection: When communication is conducted purely for entertainment, people may suddenly stop talking (the phenomenon of 'ghosting'), ignoring the feelings of the other person. Over time, this insensitivity increases, and the person becomes indifferent if they are ignored or rejected.
How to Avoid Falling into the Dopamine Dating Trap?
If you use these applications, it is recommended to set a time limit for their use (e.g., 15–20 minutes). You should also look for alternative ways to combat boredom: instead of opening the app, you could read a book, take a walk, learn a new hobby, or talk to friends. It is also important to clearly define your intentions before opening the app: are you looking for entertainment or a real connection?
